A few pics from my last dive in St Croix. Diving is my favorite pastime, although I enjoy a lot of things as you know from my posts here. Stingray at 45 feet, my favorite sea creature. wifes is the sea turtle. pic 2 barrel coral again 45 feet pic 3 wreck 70 foot Going back to St Croix in April, then off to the Bahamas to become a certified shark feeder. Wife keeps the insurance paid up. More likely to cut something off with a chainsaw then be eaten by a shark.
Oh I almost forgot, this is the fixer upper I picked up for my next project on St Croix. It faces the Caribbean Sea, which is 400 feet from the front porch. Guess what? I did not take a picture in that direction. A roof and a little stucco it will be good as new. Nope, no windows needed, never a reason to close them. screens and good to go.
Did some snorkling at Peter Island in the BVI. It amazed me of all the different colors of the fish. Never tried scuba diving though. Gary
and now the opposite end of the temperature scale........air temp 2, water temp 38 this was Sat 1/10/15. 80 degree temp difference in 10 days time St Croix 82 Ohio 2
It's good to know there's some more people on the site that like to breathe more than just 2 stroke fumes! I got open water certified in Fiji about 10 years ago. Changed my life, despite me not being able to go diving anywhere near as much as I want.
kinda an avid snorkeler here......just kinda fell into it.....so far, Cancun, Tortolla, Anegada, Turks and Caicos, St Martin......St John in early April of this year. Question.....I hear there are a couple of types of certification.....is one harder than another (I snorkel, bot have no dive license, so no tanks)......also, how hard is it to rent equipment, and is it even advisable?
Open water diving is the basic do it all certificate, good to 120 ft. That's the depth where most of the fish and corals are. But there advanced certs like wreck diving, welding, nitrox etc.
Beautiful, but I tend to stay away from snorkeling areas as they are usually really packed. I go underwater to see wildlife, not people watching wildlife.. But there's a big jump with getting certified for diving whereas anyone can snorkel. It takes many hours studying and pool/ dive work to get certified. Lousy weather, renting gear is totally fine. Some areas you need to watch out for contaminated air, but otherwise renting all gear is fine. I don't dive anywhere near as much as I want to, and I own my own snorkel, mask, fins and gloves. The scuba specific gear of BCD, regulator, weight belt I only rent, but I'd buy all those if I lived somewhere warmer, or dove more regularly. You have to be die hard to own your own tank. Familiarity with the gear make it easier to not worry about those things and concentrate on the unknowns. Plus it's nice to know I'm the only one whose snot has been in my mask.. I can snorkel anytime with only needing anything except a flagcat most.
open water is the beginning certification. Contact some dive centers on St John and ask them about certification. You can do all the book work before you get there and make 4 dives with them and get certified. Also can contact a local shop do the book work and some pool work then certify in St John. The cool thing about that would be your cert. card will say St john on it. Better yet I will be on St Croix April 11-18, come on over and we can get you certified and dive together.
Yep, it's cool having your dive cert saying a cool foreign far away place. Mine is through Swiss Fiji Divers. It's got an awesome pic of me just off the boat walking up the beach coming from the bay where I just finished my final dive.
dang! I'll just miss you....we will be in St John April 2-12.....have to get back to pay my taxes.... Ive kicked around certification for year, but procrastinated...its just SO easy to ravel with a carry-on duffel under the seat....we literally check NO baggage. The more I travel, the more I learn. I research the heck out of a place, rent a car and a condo (condo I can cook my own meals, etc.....a car because its ultimately cheaper and FAR more convenient than a taxi!..... so.....have to see what happens! cant wait!
nice pics, we do about the same cook in and drive around. St Croix is the quiet island, you should check out Cottages by the sea, we like them, laid back and quiet. If you see 10 people on the beach it is crowded. Walk to the Fredericksted pier and dive. N2 the Blue dive shop, pier and boat dives.
cool- we are straying at Three Virgins View....its kinda between Cruz bay and Chocolate Hole. I also hear Haulover beach is a good snorkel.....yea....I try to avoid people......here in my regular life, its pandemonium.....don't want that on vacation (St Thomas)....
