Yep, this one is "Highly Valuable Black Walnut", to me as it's for carving, not burning. Spotted a local tree guy I bought firewood from a couple years, cutting down a tree just 1/4 from home. Took notice as I drove by, it was Black Walnut & slammed on the brakes. Backed up and said hi, have to be polite first, then asked what was to become of the wood. Not a huge tree but perfect for my purposes. He said he was leaving it with the homeowner but would put me in touch in case he didn't want it. The homeowner said his neighbor, being a woodworker, asked about it & had dibs, but he would see if he wanted it all or not. That was back in June/July some time. Got a call today to come and take what I wanted.
the pics aren't showing up for me. Was dark when I got back and the flashlight went dead as I put the tailgate down. Still a bit of it there. He's going to be processing a couple piles of stuff tomorrow & wouldn't take anything for the Walnut so I told him I'd come back tomorrow for a couple more pieces and bring a saw to help him with the rest. I'll get a group shot then. Right now I need to get an axe in my hands.
Ok. Here's the proof. Went back this morning and relieved him of another 8 footer of roughly 8-9" diameter and my son & I bucked up a truckload worth of the Oak, Hickory and Ash he had there. He didn't seam too comfortable on a chainsaw so I think he was happy to have that done for him. Time to get carving. God I love the smell of Walnut.
Been able to spend some time carving on the Walnut, still have a bit to go but I'm loving the color and grain so far. And the smell of Walnut while I'm working brings back all kinds of good memories.
