I have most the stuff to put a saw together. I am going to build this saw on an 064 bottom. I have heard Something about a 064 ks jug can be built stronger than a 066 or 660. Is that what you have all experienced? What makes the difference between them?

    Thank you

    David

Btw nice place you have here

If you don't have a early 066 non decomp cylinder, stick with the KS 064.

Better port timing. The 064 is a runner

I have a Mahle red light 066 jug and a ks 064 with a meteor slug with it. Only enough parts to build one saw. Decisions decisions

Maybe Mastermind will chime in and help you decide which is better

Out of curiosity, was/is there something significant about the cylinders used on the red lights?

My 064 is a KS jug, but Mastermind said all the 064 jugs end up the same after porting. Stock the KS jug is stronger. I'd think the extra cc's of the 066 jug would make a stronger runner if you're getting it ported.

Better numbers and easier to optimize for torque porting.

    I think.

That's what I've heard but. Also heard the 064 were tough to beat. I didn't know if the base compression made a difference.

Kolbenschmidt I believe. They manufactured cylinders for Sthil saws once upon a time. I've always heard they were great cylinders and had desirable port timing. I've read a lot about folks liking them on the early 044 saws.

So they were unique for the 10-month or so period (I believe) when the produced the 066 Red Lights? Are the non-decomp cylinders produced just before or just after the Red Lights different?

    I had a Red Eye 066 and a KS 064 at the same time.........I kept the 064.

I later sent the 064 to Mastermind and was not even concerned to have him use a 066 cylinder I had, I stuck with the 52mm.

Hope that helps. Its was blowing 165psi before

I want to know why the port timing on cylinders changes with the manufacturer. Shouldn't Stihl be able to specify the port size, shape, and location regardless of who makes the cylinder for them? Or is it just a coincidence that the manufacturer changes when they needed to make design changes?

I believe the early "desirable" 10 mm 044s were made by KS.

That's a very good question. Perhaps not being a cylinder manufacturer themselves at the time Stihl simply specified the displacement and possibly desired output power?

thought my 064 had a mahale cylinder..... until I went and looked at it... I was going to make this a hybrid with a ported late model jug....

Is that a K inside of an S?

It just isn't manufactures... Stihl Mahale cylinders vary greatly in port timing over the years, then the gilardoni's and apparently the KS's too. i think Stihl played with port timing more back then before epa got involved.

    Yes

I've had 024s, 036 with them also and they ran better than the later models
