So I was working some ash’s that a friend had taken done the last couple days and 3 saws decided it’s maintenance time. 1st to need a break was the Stihl 260, just had a bolt from bucking spike disappear, no big deal and cheap fix, but I don’t have time so a grab the 026 when I’m dropping off a load The 026 hadn’t been run in awhile, tank is dry. Full it up, pull, pull, pull... no dice. Pull the air filter, drop a little mix in the carb, she pops and runs for a few seconds and stalls, repeat 4 times and finally stays running, but stalls at ideal, adjust carb no change! I’ll check fuel filter and lines tomorrow and adjust carb again and see what happens . 660 runs strong all day. Pick up to put in the truck and rattle rattle, somethings rattling around. What the heck? I didn’t have time to look into any of the issues, I will tomorrow, hopefully I figure it out, if not I’ll have a lot of questions!
Can't like that post. Sounds like you need to drain all the gas from the 026 and she'll be fine once you clear out the old gas. The 660. I hope it's a cheap fix.
Dakota Hoarder the first thing I would check would be the bolts inside the muffler, the two that attach the muffler to the cylinder can and do shake loose on the 660's, when they do it makes quite a distinctive rattle.
If it is the inner muffler bolts on the 660, I would check it out before running as it is possible that the bolt can get eaten. I had an 026 given to me that had that happen.
Yes to muffler bolts or possibly a piece of the baffle if it’s an aftermarket muffler. Use blue Loctite when installing. The spike screw- so darn common in saws and fixable with a good shot of cleaner and blue Loctite. The holes can wallow out on the lower mount (time sert if that happens) and the screw tends to be stripped in the top (the one that uses the nut to secure).
Thanks for the advice guys! It all turned out to be easy fixes! It was the inner muffler bolt on the 660 put back in and all good! Cleaned the carb on the 026 and spent some time retuning runs like a champ now! Just need to get the bolt for the spikes on the 260 and all will be ready to go! It sure is nice to get good advice (and some confidence) to be able to do basic fixes on saws. I’m sure it would have cost a lot mote than I would have thought to take it to the shop.
Looks like the peanut gallery was 3 for 3 on guessing the fixes! Lots of knowledge and experience here!
So after I returned my 026 I couldn’t get it to idle correctly it would either idle to high (chain spinning) or to low and would stall. Either way a giant PIA! Figured it had to be something clogged in fuel delivery. I was finally able to make it to the dealer today and get a new filter (figured easiest first). Replaced filter tuned again... BAM running and idealing just right.
One thing to check on the 026 is the clamp on the manifold rubber. I fought mine trying to get a good tune. When I went to replace it I found the clamp to be loose. After tightening it was all gooder.
It wouldn't surprise me that many have had days like that. One day my Husky 55 rancher lost the throttle trigger pin. The Stihl 028 super av had a fuel line crack. My 391 lost a bucking spike bolt too. Packed it up, went home, addressed the problems and went out at the next opportunity.
Always good when it’s easy fix and basic maintenance! Not so much when a crank shaft breaks off like it did on my 441!
