Hey guys been busy on a dozen open projects.

Still clearing land for my pole barn build and am debating just cutting all the mature SYP and selling the timber before they fall victim to the bark beetle.

What rough cut length for a commercial mill? I’m trying to find a local smaller outfit to haul on halves if I cut and load.

The whole tree. Cutting to length reduces yield.

Even lengths starting at 8’ plus 6” trim on each log

This works, but will likely reduce the money you can make.

How many acres are you clearing?

I know you’re up in NY but any ballpark on pricing- I’m not trying to make a fortune just can’t process this many pine trees most are 16-20dbh 70-80’ tall most with no scarring or limbs until 40’+

Backwoods Savage, Maina, Chaz and 2 others like this.

Not a lot of acres unless I bring someone in to select cut the entire property.
Realistically 30-40’nice saw log trees 2-3 trailer loads not worth anyone’s time or effort.
I don’t want to look at a clear cut disaster for the next 10-20 years

I honestly have no idea for SYP.
I’ve been out of the forest products biz for 2-3 years . Haven’t kept in touch with contacts. I don’t even know what white pine price is up here anymore.
    Clemsfor would likely know.
Sounds like you have some good stuff. Possibly electric pole grade.

    This
    Take some pics of trees
Take some pics of a tape at DBH
    Show them to several mills
3 loads isn’t gonna impress any big mills.
As mentioned ask for local mill advice.
    Hopefully Clem shows up.
He’ll have a better idea of your market

    Thanks for link and insight.
GP just revamped a mill about 12mi from my house pretty sure it’s a dimensional mill but most of these would easily grade prime #1 and could be power poles- a few of them the extra big ones. Not sure if that’s what the local mills deal in.
I’m gonna hit them up to see if they have a smaller transport that will deal with me.
    I’ll post back if materializes

We have state foresters in every county, and Extension used to have foresters available. Our county foresters are top-notch, feet on the ground types, and they are aware of the market avenues available in our area. Maybe there is someone similar, with less of a vested interest, to help you get max value.
