Looking at getting a new freshwater fishing rod spinner combo. Occasional fisherman at best, not looking to dump a lot but don't want a no name Spiderman kiddy rod for $5.95 either. I know I won't get much of a rod for 50-75 bucks, but I don't fish die hard and just want a "good" entry-level bass/northern/walleye rod. What do any of you have for hands on experience with what brands good and bad? Looked at a Pflueger monarch, Shakespeare ugly stik, and a Mitchell 300, scratched my head and walked away, thought to myself "ask the experts at the FHC"!
I have used Shakespeare ugly stik for awhile now. Fairly priced and has a nice feel. I am partial to Shimano reels but there are lots of other quality reels as well. Find one you like the feel of and is smooth. A nice medium action would be a good all around rod. For the occasional user that price range will last you a long time with a little tlc once in awhile. With two kids and two dogs on the boat I wouldn't want to worry about a more expensive set up getting broken or going overboard.
My experience is in salmon & steelhead fishing, but should carry over. A lot of the more affordable rods today are way better than the premium rods of the past. Okuma, Berkley, and Shimano make really good sticks. I have a couple of Cabela's Fish Eagle rods in my rack that get a lot of use too. I own a few premium rods and honestly don't see myself buying another one when the cheaper rods fish just as well. I'd stay away from no-name reels or store brand reels. All my reels are Shimanos.
My vote. Berkley Cherrywood. I've converted a handful of buddies in the last couple years. Easily picked up a WaitMart. I've actually been using a Zebco trigger style underslung closed faced micro spin reel. They kick arse for a ultralite setup. Use for a season and toss as the plastic guts wear out eventually! The rod will last a long time (or until it meets the truck door/topper door etc). This combo is available in a medium weight also. Good for your application. And cheap. $50 should buy it all!
