The Cub wouldn't restart. This was a few days ago.
I took a short vid of trying to start, and the ensuing groan......

    Bad starter?

sounds like the bendix isn't going far enough... if it was really cold put it on a battery charger.. it works on my old cub...

Thing is, it was working just a couple minutes prior, but yeah, it was cold.
I can put it on the charger too.

When you get it running see if it smokes like crazy. You wouldn't miss it tho.

My sit down does that even in the summer. Gas runs through the carb while sitting, fills the cylinder drastically increasing compression until the exhaust valve opens and dumps it all into the muffler.
My lazy man fix was putting a fuel shutoff on it. Works as long as I and everyone else who uses it remembers.

    Ethanol

I'd vote for starter bendix not spinning up high enough to grab the ring gear teeth. Could be dirty, worn etc. worst case the teeth are blown off it or a spot missing teeth on the flywheel ring gear, but I would check the starter bendix first. Try turning the flywheel a touch by hand then hit the starter see if she grabs

Pesky little carb shut off on the bottom of the carb? My dad had fought the same problem all last summer then went and got a new mower and the old one is now in my barn to add to the future project list

Have to admit every time I see your handle "Boomstick" I chuckle a little cause that's what my brother and I have referred to our slug guns as since we started deer hunting with them  :thumbs:

Unfortunately, I've been too busy, but I plan to get out tomorrow and check it out.
Won't matter much, as we'll be out of town for a few days (nephew watching the house and dogs for us) for Christmas.

Yup sounds like the starter. The genius who thought up the plastic gear on a spring to grab a cast flywheel was off his rocker.

You're young enough to be papadave's son, let alone his nephew :D

My MTD does the same thing. The previous owner put a shutoff in the fuel line too.

    Faulty fuel shutoff Solenoid

Could be the real answer to Jo's problem instead of blaming ethanol.

That doesn't sound like the answer to papdaves issue though. Although this thread may have been detoured from the way it seems.:D

    Bingo!!!

A fuel shutoff works around the issue for cheap. It's worked flawlessly for 8 years that way. Engine off, shut fuel off. Easy peasy.
