An exterior door that swings in with hinges on the left hand side and door handle is on the right side .Is this considered to be a right hand or left hand door ?
I think they go by the hinge so you would have a left hand in swing door...Standing on the outside...
Open the door. Put your butt against the hinges. If the door swings to your left, it's a left swing door. Right=right.
facing the door from the outside of door ( the locked side) hinge on left with door swinging in is considered a left hand door .
Here is something to further confuse or clarify, depending on the individual. An inswing door is defined as handed on the side that the hinge is located viewed from outside (house or the room). In original posters scenario, a left hand door exists. Now outswing the door and it may be necessary to add the descriptor "reverse bevel" to the handing, which remains consistent with the inswing definition. This additional term will allow for proper locations of screws on window kits, lock preps etc.
