In the MSN article on him (I linked above) it stated in 1970, Ken Osmond joined the Los Angeles Police Department, serving as an officer until he was struck by five bullets during a chase with a suspected car thief and placed on disability before his retirement in 1988.

I don't know where the cut off is for those of us that watched it, but I know I did. We didn't have cable growing up. I'm sure people of my age that had cable, probably were less likely to watch it. Not like it wasn't available to watch on cable, but getting slimed on Nickelodeon probably won out with kids.

Ok. NOW I feel old. I love leave it to Beaver. Sometimes when I am finishing a pot of coffee I feel guilty when I remember the little saucers.(I still finish my pot of coffee though)

From what I read of this situation, 4 shots hit his vest, the 5th was deflected by his belt buckle! RIP Eddie.
