Does anyone here have experience reloading 165g JHP for the 45 ACP? With ammo the way things are, a friend came across some 165g JHPs that he wanted me to load for him. I've loaded 185g with 231 powder before, but I can't seem to find any references to loading something as light as 165g. Someone came out with a commercial 165g load (Hornady maybe) so I know it can be done. I'm sure all you 230g fans are asking yourselves - Why would he want to?
Given the difficulty in finding reloading components, I understand. I have been looking for Varget for my .223 since the beginning of the year. Down to my last pound and the groundhogs are getting bold.
I feel your pain. I have bought up every box of projectiles and jug of powder I can find....and then there is little to no data out there for it Anyway, Not my loads but here is the closest thing I can find to 165gr in a 45. I just got around to checking my books and nothing. Who made the bullets? Their website might have a loading table for them.
I finally got around to loading and testing the 165g JHP for my friend. The bag of bullets he gave me had no manufacturer on it so I don't know who made them, but they look pretty nice. I was originally going to load this for him with "231" powder. However, he was running low on "231" and wanted to keep it for other uses, but he had a lot of "Blue Dot" left. While not the ideal powder I would use for this load (I've used it in 40, 44 and heavy 45) 185g data showed a range of around 7.5 - 10g. I didn't want to waste a lot of bullets working up the load, so I just started with a half grain spread from 8.5 - 10.5g. The "upper amounts" of Blue Dot filled the cases nicely giving an uncompressed full load. They all seemed to shoot fine without any signs of pressure issues, accuracy was all about the same at short 25' range. I loaded up one more with 11g and tried that. It also did not show any signs of pressure issues, but did fly a little left. I could try and pinpoint the load a little better with a 0.1g spread around 10.5g, but in the interest of conserving bullets I think I'm going to just go with the 10.5g. These are probably just going to be target plinkers anyway ............... his home/concealed carry load is some vintage Black Talons!
