Looks like red oak for sure. I have had good luck covering it with black plastic and it is burnable after a year but after 2 years makes some prime firewood. I always stack it versus throwing it in a pile makes the drying easier Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
The lines radiating from the center on your transverse cut or axial plane scream oak. The bark does not look like white oak, it's way too dark. All trees have medullary lines or "rays" as they are a very basic biological function for trees , in oak they are quite pronounced and obvious. recently cut red oak should have a very distinctive "red oak" smell when freshly split. Kinda sour like black cherry but without the fruityness.
Yep, its red oak. Great score!!! Thats all we've been cutting here. Get that down to 17-18% moisture content and you'll be set! That takes 3 years here for us, but you may be able to get that down in 2 years in your area
Last year I loaded my stove full of red oak during a cold spell. I've only been burning 3 years now and it was only dry because it was a blow down that was hung up in some trees and I used a cheap shrink wrap solar kiln. That being said I had to move the couch further away from the stove the oak burned so hot. It's great stuff. Only downside is the drying time.
That definitely looks red to me. just got off the phone about a CL oak score....I hope it isnt red! Im just getting the vomit smell out of the neighborhood from the last red oak score back in December.
Love splitting it. I always make sure I put a red oak round on the old block when my lady is watching or walks by . Always gets me a wink .
Mrs TD and I felled , cut, split and stacked red oak all day today and a couple hours last night. Its bedtime now. I'm whooped!
