My phone rings and it's my BIL's, FIL. The utility/tree service had been by and took down a standing dead maple. The trunk was left. I tood a ride over. 5mins away, same town as me In the last picture, to the right, is the oval stump. Looks to be about 3ft+ The piece to the left of that stump, is the beginning of what looks to be a double leader. That's a big piece of wood. I was able to easily roll a log, with my foot. So, it's light, which means dry inside. Looked solid. Off street parking and I can cut right there. Looks like I'll be busy for awhile. Maybe Tuesday. Supposed to be showery until there. Guessing a cord or more. I'll take it and mix it in with all the red oak I have. RM by day. RO at night.
Those are big uns Mike. Looks like Norway maple to me though. NM bark resembles ash. Better btu's than RM.
I only scored one small chunk of a Norway Maple street tree taken down last summer, and it had darker heart wood like yours. The bark is what points in that direction though. Sometimes you buck the system, sometimes the system bucks your wood
It could. I havent scored much NM in the last two years as its an urban tree it seems. It splits easier than red maple and is more brittle. Snaps easier under snow/ice load and heavy winds. The wood is "whiter" than other maples. Try splitting soon after cutting and it pops rather easily. Pic from earlier this month where i split some Norway for a customer.
Yes, definitely Norway. Like all firewood, it should be top covered. I had a bunch of NM that didn’t dry well bc I stored it poorly.

The red in that stump looks like it could be fairly soft. Deceiving for ID. I don't recall cutting a norway maple that was rotting in the center. Easiest way to ID norway maple is with a leaf. Tougher when the tree is deceased.
I'm glad I'm leaving the stump. In the first picture, middle top, you can see 2 face cuts that don't appear to be rotted. Those 2 cuts are the beginning of the double leader. The opposite end, is the cut from just above the stump.
That makes me ohfer two. I was wrong in different thread, about what I thought was hickory. Now this RM. Always learning here! I'm glad to see that most identify it as norway. Even better! I hope to do my first cutting on Tuesday.
Like another member once said, we’re the firewood hoarders club, not the firewood identifiers club I’m like you, still learning (is any reasonable person ever really done learning?) I’m still off a lot of times on I.D.

Agreed! Once I saw it, I knew it was ok firewood. Regardless of the first name. I had the 2nd name correct.
