The horses on the farm next door ate the bark from the base of the tree and killed it. It fell in some high winds a while back. I think it's red elm but I'm not sure. What do you say? Don't guess it matters much ; they pay me to cut it and get it out of the way and I get to keep the wood.
Could be american elm. We don't have red elm here but I don't think there is a big difference in the bark and leaf between the two but the interior, or the wood is really different!
I actually would have ruled out American based on those thick ridges in the bark - I've only seen that in Siberian and Red. But then again I've never seen an American Elm over 8" or so that still had bark on it.
When I was younger, we used to have American Elm here so big around in towns that four people (or three people) couldn't link arms around. Sadly I watched them all get taken down in the 70's & 80's. Like fish stories they get bigger as time goes by. But they were big.
