Went out on the weekend and found a nice big red alder to bring home to Granny's. Campinspecter tries to partly cut through the log and then uses the peeve to roll the log over to finish the cuts. Truck and woodsplitter ready to go to work. Almost ready for rolling the log My job is to throw wood into the truck and stack it in there. I have been taking videos so the pile got a little ahead of me. Campinspecter making the splitting look easy. If the Alder is big with no knots, it splits very easy. This had lots of hidden knots and broken branches in it. We usually don't find alders this big. Half a load stacked.
Still some left to split and load. This slash was logged with the last year for the second time. There are some really big stumps with springboard notches from the first time this was logged. I don't think I got any pictures of them. Next time we go out, I will try to get some pics of them. I took some videos as well so I will try to upload them and post the links.
To finish the load off, Campinspecter found a little hemlock laying beside the road so we bucked, split and loaded it into the truck.
Used a log dog and the splitters winch to roll the log to buck the under side. You can see the log dog planted in the alder's trunk in the first video.
Bet it feels good to be back out cutting wood ! Long bar makes that type of cutting a lot easier on the back You are good ! ! You just missed a rock by 1/4" in on the hemlock Great pics & videos ! !
It's great to be back!! That powerhead with a short bar would be deadly for kickbacks and the longer bar, I agree, it's much easier on the back. On the rock, just lucky. Next time I will lift it a little higher and sit the short log on piece of a split round to get it off the rocks.
We went and got some pictures of a couple of the stumps in the slash. This area has been cut twice. The first time the trees were quite a bit bigger and it would have been with two people using a big cross cut saw standing on springboards. Here is the distance around this big cedar stump. It is hard to tell how old this tree was when it was felled. The little tree that was growing on top was fallen this winter. This should give an idea how big the stump is. My personal favorite of the pics I took. I am so glad that I take the pictures. There were a few stumps like this in the setting. The smaller, shorter ones were fallen this winter.
Great pics Amazing that the wood was that big at one time. Lots of the trees in the PNW were that big prior to the logging boom. Good thing they cam down with an axe. My measly 20" bar wouldn't have a chance felling one that big LOL
