I’m thinking ahead a little bit (I know surprise myself also!) we supposed to have high temps of -10 on Wednesday and who knows how cold with the wind. Probably have school canceled so I’ll be home to reload the insert. I’m guess 1/2 a face cord which will be a record for me! What’s your record for most wood burned in 1 day?
I'm not looking forward to Wednesday morning either! Estimated low temperature is -37° air temperature Wednesday at 8am, windchill near -50°.
Nowhere near that!!! But then again, the Blue Ridge Mtns. don’t see them temps often... not at least in the 7 years we’ve been burning.
That is a pretty good amount for a day but I can see where some could go through that much. But I'd hate to have too long of a stretch where one used that much wood. To be honest, I have no idea what is the most we've burned in a day but do remember some of the older stoves we've had and some of the uninsulated houses we've had and know it was a lot.
About the most I can do in a single day would be about 8 hour reloads instead of my normal 12. Right around 1/3 of a face cord I guess.
I know that having an OWB also comes with a reputation of burning an excessive amount of wood, but nowhere-nohow near 1/2 face cord a day! Maybe your split sizes need to be larger?
Cue Midwinter with a picture of a Texas A&M bonfire for the most burned in one day...for now, this one will have to do...
yeaaaahhhh I dunno about that. My half facecord rack in the garage lasts me a little over a week in temp like these, and 2 weeks during 30s temps.
They built a memorial... and "The accident led Texas A&M to declare a hiatus on an official Bonfire. However, since 2002, a student-sponsored coalition has constructed an annual unsanctioned, off-campus "Student Bonfire" in the spirit of its predecessor." Aggie Bonfire - Wikipedia
Filled my wood room 2 Friday's ago. Always stack 2 facecord in front of the furnace and backfill against the wall with loose throw wood. Burned a 20" face cord and 4-5 gal buckets of coal in 9 days (up till yesterday). Been pretty good heat demand the last 9 days. I think I'd be hard pressed to burn a facecord/day even in the homesteads CB 6048 which has a monster firebox. Edit: just looked up the size of CB 6048 firebox,,,,,,,, 60 cubic feet !!!! Maybe it does burn a face cord a day !!!!!!
My most is about 90-100 lbs., Or 24 smallish splits of Hickory which fill four 5 gallon buckets, or approx 3.5 cu ft of wood, or approx .03 cords or in fractions 1/32 of a cord/day. Two fires a day are enough to heat my 2800 sqft home in below zero temps.
I think 4-5 cubic feet of wood in 24 hours is literally the most I can stuff in a stove like I have. More if I want to throw out coals every night.
I wonder if he is using straight cottonwood? I remember a recent post of his regarding use of cottonwood. I have burned it in the past, but not exclusively. Usually CW is reserved for the campfires. The one I noted was a boxelder I took down. When that stack got broke into and out of (usually burned ash), it was noticeably shorter burn times than I was used to.
