Right now I'm splitting everything with a fiskars ss. Its great for alot of the straight pieces of ash that i have but it simply does not have enough grunt for for the pieces with quite a few knots in them.

I'm 6 ft 8 in tall so i really need a 36 in handle. my budget is 50$ and of course i want to get the best possible maul for my money. Please share your experiences with cheaper 8lb mauls.

    thanks in advance,
    Joe

I bought just a couple generic mails at a flea market for around $8 to $15 a piece. Then just tested them to see which one I liked best. Just check them over really good. I won't buy any with tape or rubber on the handles or bad chips on the head. I prefer a sledge hammer eye for ease of getting a new handle.

If I can't get it apart with the Fiskars I go straight to the wedge and sledge method.

Council tool is about the only one that will get in under the $50 budget.

I picked up a 8# truper fg handle brand new for $38. Used it for the last year and no complaints.

I have the same one. I did some work on the edge and it's a little better, but the short handle is awful I think and I'm only 5'7" on a good day.

I agree that a nice 8# maul compliments the Fiskars for the bigger stuff.

I like the fiberglass handles which are more durable for mis-hits. Mine is a Craftsman and has held up well.

Fiskars here, works on 90% of what I throw at it. The remaining 10% goes into the hydraulic splitter pile. Like a few guys have said, once the hydraulic splitter showed up the Fiskars took a back seat.
