Right now I'm splitting everything with a fiskars ss. Its great for alot of the straight pieces of ash that i have but it simply does not have enough grunt for for the pieces with quite a few knots in them. I'm 6 ft 8 in tall so i really need a 36 in handle. my budget is 50$ and of course i want to get the best possible maul for my money. Please share your experiences with cheaper 8lb mauls. thanks in advance, Joe
This is what i use www.menards.com/main/mobile/tools-hardware/hand-tools/axes-mauls/yardworks-fiberglass-maul/p-2015510-c-13244.htm
I bought just a couple generic mails at a flea market for around $8 to $15 a piece. Then just tested them to see which one I liked best. Just check them over really good. I won't buy any with tape or rubber on the handles or bad chips on the head. I prefer a sledge hammer eye for ease of getting a new handle.
Council tool has an assortment of mauls that a few members here have had good experience with. Very cheap, and made in USA to boot http://www.counciltool.com/DisplayCategories.asp?pg=displaycategories&category=73
Yup and it works great hanging on my shelf lol. Actually it got used heavily for three years or so and works great. When I acquired the splitter it got hung up.
I have the same one. I did some work on the edge and it's a little better, but the short handle is awful I think and I'm only 5'7" on a good day.
I agree that a nice 8# maul compliments the Fiskars for the bigger stuff. I like the fiberglass handles which are more durable for mis-hits. Mine is a Craftsman and has held up well.
over the weekend I ended up at menards and picked up the 8lb fiberglass yardworks maul for 30$ I tried it on a few rounds and it works great on the rounds that the Fiskars cant handle.
Fiskars here, works on 90% of what I throw at it. The remaining 10% goes into the hydraulic splitter pile. Like a few guys have said, once the hydraulic splitter showed up the Fiskars took a back seat.
