I would say for me I’ll exclude Black Locust as I just acquired some and haven’t burnt it yet. My go to woods top to bottom would probably be Sugar Maple and Shagbark Hickory tied, Red Oak, White Oak, Black Birch, Red Maple, Yellow Birch, and Cherry for hardwoods. Then Poplar and Pine at the bottom but good for shoulder wood. Hope I didn’t forget any.

I think my favorite wood is ash or elm in my current stove as it seems to give a good cat burn

That's a hard question for me to answer, I have an EPA stove and it likes to burn hot to operate at full efficiency....
So I love the best hardwoods, red oak, sugar maple, hickory, locust etc...when it's cold.... But... I love aspen, sasafrass, pine, red maple etc. to get the stove started and in shoulder season to burn hot, but not burn as long as the good stuff, so I don't cook myself out of the house.

I've had other stoves in past years, where I would have answered your question, wth only the highest BTU wood...
