From Earthship building, I am growing fond of buildding a retaining wall from old tires. The wall around one building will be 100' long and be probably 5 or 6' tall in some places. After that, there are plenty of places to add retaining walls here. Anybody have any experience with building something like this? Sca
No experience here, but a quick internet search led to plenty of interesting pictures. I've never seen such a thing before. I know finding used tires for free shouldn't be too hard. 100' of wall is quite a bit! When I built about 20' of retaining wall from railroad ties last summer it was a ton of manual labor, and the kind of job I'd recommend for either spring or fall. I do like the idea of using old tires though, if that's your style
Thanks for looking Eric. I dont like the look of a tire wall, but between concrete, adobe, wooden fence pickets, sheet steel roofing, or just rough sawn lumber, ill dress it up to look fence like. We'll probably stack tires in the garage just to keep things tidy till they're needed. Sca
Here is my garden, where I started a short retaining wall that i need to finish someday… The tires are tacked together with some 8d ring shank nails, more to hold them still while I dumped dirt in with the tractor.
