After 30+ years, I've started hunting rabbits (and trying to train a Beagle pup) again. Made some stews, "Pulled Rabbit" BBQ and egg rolls. Anybody have any other recipes?

We are looking at raising meat rabbits, and I hear that you can treat them like pork and mutton. Hope that helps.

The only way I fix rabbit is in the crockpot. I layer potatoes and quartered rabbit then a can of mushroom soup over the top. Let it sit all day and its ready when I get home. The only reason I cook like this is because I haven't taken the time to learn a new recipe.

Dad and I raised meat rabbits when I was a kid. I have talked to my fiancé about wanting to get back into it.

My concern with raising them is how cuddly they are...

We used to raise them for meat on the farm...... You would pick them up and cuddle them, then hold them by their back feet, and smack them in the neck/head with a schedule 40 pipe........  Then in a few hours you were enjoying them for dinner.

Unfortunately being raised on a working farm you learned at an early age that, chickens, rabbits, cows, and hogs were not pets.

Yeah, I would have no prob with any of the others and I wouldn't be trying to make them pets... I think it's just that they remind me of cats.

Hmmm...not sure what became of the rest of my last post...I'll try again

One of my favorite things to do with small game is Cacciatore. In Italian means "Hunter" or alla cacciatore food in the style of the hunter. Most recipes will be with chicken, but just substitute any small game of choice for an "authentic" dish.

I'm sure farm raised rabbit has to taste different than a regular 'ol whitetail, no? We always cook small game (rabbits, squirrels, etc.) in the crock pot since they're so tough.

I cook squirrel in the crock pot with a couple cups of chicken broth, salt, pepper, and garlic. Pulls right off the bone and use it for whatever or eat it just like that.

I really don't like eating tree rat, but the kids like hunting them...and you eat what you kill.

My Mom used to make a pot pie using rabbit that was pretty good.

Just had to watch out to not throw it down the chute too fast, once in a while there would be a shotgun pellet or two still in the meat.

More like, up late - just got home from work. Good looking pooch as your avatar, by-the-way.

Yeah, I made Cacciatores with rabbits (or more accurate, "varying hare" up here) last year and they are great. I made a Bigos (a Polish hunter's stew) a couple of weeks ago with rabbit and venison, also very good. I like Nate's Pot Pie idea too. Of course, as a teenager we'd pan-fry them with onions and peppers.

Even though I hadn't hunted them for awhile, I always seem to end up with a bunny or two in the freezer (from friends that hunt) and now since I've started hunting them again they seem to be multiplying (as rabbits will do), so I'll try a couple of these posts.

Welcome Art to FHC! It's been a long time since I've hunted or ate rabbit so I am not much good there.

Don't forget traditional Hasenpfeffer. You marinate the meat for a few days and it completely tenderizes, then braise it slow to make the gravy for the rabbit and dumplings. I add ginger snaps and brown sugar to the gravy as in the Sauerbraten method and its oh so good.
