My buddy in VT is looking to replace his woodstove with a pellet stove. He's a weekender like us.

His current setup: Woodstove is located in the lower finished level (walk out basement) of an a-frame. Pipe goes up through the first level floor, upper level floor (exposed on all floors) and up through the roof. Installation would run the 4" pellet pipe through the existing stove pipe, then make some changes on the roofline...or at the cap. I haven't seen the actual estimate.

The local stove place came out and sent him an estimate. They quoted him at $5,000 for everything installed.

Open to thoughts on the stove and the price. He's pretty close to pulling the trigger on this. His asthma and the wood stove are not getting along well.

Seems pretty hefty to me for a Castile but since we don’t know the piping involved it’s kinda hard to say for sure. That’s a small footprint stove to heat 3 floors from the basement.

I dont think any of that will make him happy. Stove too small, cost too high. Unless it is for ambiance purposes only and he has money to burn.

X2 like CM said......If looks aren't important he should go with the Santa Fe same stove, different shell and cheaper. On the outside, it really looks like he may be asking too much out of that stove to heat that area.

Thanks guys! Looks are important, his wife didn't like the look of the steel stoves.

I think this is a done deal. He put a deposit on it recently; talked to him last night. I'll keep everyone posted.

I think you can hook up an external t-stat to this stove? I may help him out with a wifi unit so he can turn the stove on a few hours before they come up on a Friday.

    Congrats to him!

I still hate to say it but I hate seeing people over pay for stuff but it's not my money. He'll have a very good stove though albeit "seemingly" undersized.

I think it comes with a cheapie stat, but yes, you could substitute another. Let me add my concerns that I think the stove is too small for what he wants to do, especially in an A-Frame.

Has he looked at the mout Vernon. I think he’s really gonna regret dropping $5k on a stove that’s gonna heat his basement with a little leftover to MAYBE get some heat upstairs.im sure that deposit can be transferred to a bigger stove if they decided to go that route

Thanks guys. It'll primarily be used to heat the finished basement area.

Installed and burning! So far, so good. We visited Friday and Saturday night. Puts out good heat and is easy to use. It’s a nice looking unit. Maine softies has n the hopper.
