Processing firewood

We got a couple inches of snow yesterday and overnight. First snow of the year. I had cut part of a load of red oak Saturday into rounds, and I finished cutting the rest of it today. Probably end up splitting it Thursday or Friday.

 

That's a great looking load of wood! Looks like you have some fun work ahead of you!

 

It's been a few years since I've worked up any wood in the snow. Maybe I'll get a chance this year.

 

It’s a pretty solid bet that I’ll never be making firewood in the snow. Kevin’s latest video looks like 2-4” of snow on the ground and log.

 

That's a nice looking load of wood! I prefer doing wood in the warmer months, but we end up doing it in the snow too.

 

I don’t mind the snow much. Sure does make things quiet when it’s fresh. You have your work cut out for you.

 

I don’t mind processing in the snow, but the problem this time of year is the mud. That’s the part that’s annoying. Frozen ground makes it so much more pleasant!

 

I don't know what it is about processing wood in the snow, but I really enjoy. I hand split and I save doing that on cold days when the cold air burns your nose a little and it's quiet and still out. No one else is around.

 

Good pile of RO ....I cut a big load of sugar last winter with 2 inches on the ground and snowing lightly.

 

I prefer the cold weather splitting and cutting.

Good workout coming your way. I love getting wood in the snow and cold weather as long as it's not a wet slushy type of snow......that can be miserable.

I don't like being cold and wet. One or the other please.

 

Got most of it done this afternoon. Warmed up and could work without my sweatshirt on. I’ll finish it tomorrow. Could have finished it but saw the neighbor going hunting and didn’t want to disturb him.

 

Making noise just puts the deer at ease. It lets them know that everything is normal and no reason for alarm. We see a lot of deer when cutting and splitting wood. We had several walk right past us, about 10 feet away, while we were running the splitter. They really don't care. What bothers them the most is when it gets quiet.

 

I’ve always felt that cutting wood during deer season doesn’t seem to impact the deer movement, but I’ve never had them that comfortable while cutting/splitting. That’s pretty cool they were that close

 

Made some good progress. What will become of the mound of scraps etc?

 

Scraps have been going to my brother. I just make a pile and he gets them as he needs them. If they didn’t burn up so fast, they’re all I’d burn to heat the house.

 

Finished the rounds this morning in a light rain. When I stack them, I’ll give a total on how much it measures out to be.
