    Looking for advice or suggestions.

I have a maple close to my building that has been suffering from crotch rot for a few years now. It's pretty rotted where the trunks come together, the wood peckers are going to town eating the ants and other insects that are thriving in the rot. Problem is at least two of the trunks when they eventually come down are going to hit building. I've been watching for a couple years now as this has worsened and I eventually need to address it before I have a tree on my building.

I don't think I can tackle this one on my own, I think I need a professional. Maybe someone that can climb and cut it down piece by piece?

Thoughts? And I'm not asking for any of you guys to do it, just advice on how it should come down.

Whenever it's a big tree leaning toward a building (home), and it is questionable at the base... I'd get a tree service company there with either a bucket truck or climbers (your drive gives good access) ... it'll be gone by noon. Take lots of pics... ... and, you'll have some good wood to CSS too!

I was thinking the same thing. I never had to use a service before, I always have been able to do them myself and was lucky enough not to have big leaners close to the house.

    Carefully :)

Looks like a tough one & even with pictures, we can't see all the angles & possible issues.

    I'll stick by , "Carefully"
Very difficult to give other advice on tree work & not be there to see the full size & scope.

If that was one trunk you could probably deal with it, but with the multiple trunks , I would say hire a pro
Even If you cut that tree close to the ground ,the way the bottom of that tree has grown you might not get a proper hinge

Put an ad on Craigslist advertising free premium firewood to anyone who shows up with their arborist license, proof of insurance, 7 years work history in the tree business and a promissory note to purchase the structure should the tree go the wrong way... Oh yeah.. and when they show up to do it, remind them that removing the brush and stump for free is also part of the deal!!

Put on Craig's List as "free firewood"

Must be licensed, bonded, insured. All crew members must be 20-28 yr old supermodels wearing only chaps and gloves. Need to remove the stump and branches, but you get to have all the firewood... for FREE!

    :rolleyes::rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol:

ARGH! I guess I needed to read all the threads, stuckinthemuck beat me too it by an hour. And I thought I was being FUNNAY too :(

Definitely hire a tree service. You don't need to take on that kind of risk personally. I have no problem hiring one of the tree services that have kept me in wood for the past 15 years when I need work done in my yard. While you are getting quotes also use it as an opportunity to start a relationship with someone who can supply you with wood.

Okay Nate.... Now you're being un-realistic..... Of course it would make a great plot for one of those movies I wasn't allowed to watch as a kid!!o_O "Chaps 'n' Chainsaws"

Ugh, I wouldn't trust that tree at all. Now rotting out, yes, get a professional to do it. Select one that has experience and equipment. A friend had their tree cut in pieces and lifted out of the way so the branches couldn't fall and do damage. Going to cost you, but not near what it might if neglected.

With my luck and craigslist, I would have it all arranged and be waiting anxiously with the camera to take the ultimate pics to post on FHC, and a bunch of Chippendale guys show up with chaps and chainsaws... :bug: :bug::rofl:

Well, if that happens, make a calendar out of it and sell it as a fund raiser for the wood hoarders forum!

Ok Larry, let me ask this....exactly how many of the guys on this forum do you think would actually buy one of those calendars?
Unless they were doing it for their wives/girlfriends, I'd bet not many. Just my WAG.

  It wouldn't be (necessarily :zip:) for us to look at, but it might be a good fund raiser for events. Firemen, town leaders etc. have done this raising money. It is all done in fun for a good cause. So if you did buy some and give them out, you might get a few smiles, grins, maybe a chuckle. :drunk:
