Well this is an interesting discovery. Our furnace died ( killed itself again ) last winter and according to the county we are required to have a primary heat source. Well I was planning on adding a pellet furnace in place of the gas and keeping the wood stove too.

Pellet will not be considered primary by the county or insurance they consider it decorative only. Heres the discovery Catalytic stoves are considered primary! That was a surprise. In other words I can buy a cat stove and not even mess with the furnace for the insurance and county, they will accept that I am officially elated about this but now I have to decide what stove to buy. Its between the blaze king ashford, regency f5100 and woodstock stoves.

Our furnace budget was $2000 but I can sell our Jotul F50 now and get closer to $3500 to buy a stove assuming I can sell the well loved Jotul before winter.

    Any advice?

My wife really likes the regency… I Like the blaze king ashford…

Pete, got any Regency stores nearby?
The 5100 is a big stove. Big stove.
    Bigger than the NC30.
This may be your nearest BK dealer...........http://www.heatmichigan.com/
    They're in Davison.
We bought a goat, or a sheep, or something in Davison once.

Pete, if you ever go to sell your home, a lender and/or fanniemae most likely would require a more conventional heat system. Just something to think about.

We had a Regency at our last house Pete. It did a good job using 16" sticks. I discovered later, my brother had the same stove in his place in Colorado and also really liked it. For a small stove it put out a lot of heat and kept a long fire as well.

Stay out of Davison until I get done buying a stove :zip:

Do a lot of research on the Regency. The cat placement seems like it's a problem. Directly exposed to open flame off the burn tube. Unless they've made a change.

I'd really like a Woodstock, but I really want a stove that only requires ember protection. I'm thinking heavy gauge sheet metal for my hearth, as the placement I have in mind could prove trippy.

Is this a health department policy? How did you discover this?

I second this and also add that I would want a thermostatic, automatic, heat source just in case you get sick, injured, run out of wood, or need to leave the house for a period. Crap happens.

Okay so if you're going to do this I would choose BK first and Woodstock second. Regency a distant third. There are just two real players in the cat stove market.

That's a very good point Mitch. We are in the figure it out stage right now. If I can get a good deal on a proper size and efficiency furnace I might just do it.

I went to the mechanical permit office for our county and was very informed( for once...) I am not sure which department it's under but that's the law. I vaguely recall hearing something like that years ago too. The BK is on top of my list for sure!

Wow , F5100 capable of burning a 90 lb wood load for over 30+ hours
Probably wouldn't need your pellet stove any more

They may require you to have a furnace but do they require it to work? :whistle:Unless you told them it didn't then it might be a problem.

Pete, I do not know your setup, but an electric radiator counts as a heater here even if you can't afford to use it! But a ductless mini-split does not.. What do you have for heating fuel hot water or air? You can normally pull an old closet one out of a mobile home for 60 bucks. it does not have to be real efficient if you are only going to use in emergencies. Most homes have to have it tested before sale..

Pete, with your physical problem, it's probably not a bad idea to put in something automatic. Still sucks the way they make you do things.

Yeah, Regency isn't known for honesty in burn times as BK or Woodstock are. Sure I'm biased so talk with someone (not a salesman) that actually owns one of these and get their experiences on burn times. I bet you'd be lucky to hit 20 hours before the cat goes inactive and that's a lot of firewood so the output will be quite high.
