National Weather Service forecasters expect the storm system to develop Wednesday night and gather strength before heading over the Great Lakes by early Friday. Blizzard conditions were likely to unfold across the Midwest on Thursday in places like Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, according to AccuWeather.

It’s likely to happen Thursday into Friday, according to DaSilva, who defined a bomb cyclone as the dropping of a storm’s atmospheric pressure by 24 millibars in 24 hours.

“It's a measure of rapid strengthening of a storm, and it does look like the storm will achieve that ‘bomb-cyclone’ status because it's going to strengthen pretty rapidly,"

Pre-Christmas blizzard could become a bomb cyclone in northern US (usatoday.com)

    This is winter storm Elliott.

In the northeast, we'll be on the warm side, this time. 2+ inches of rain and 60⁰ forecasted for Friday.

    Stay safe, folks!

Fridays forecast for East Texas is low of 16 degrees with a high of 30 degrees, which is somewhat rare for this early in the season. Stay warm and safe during the holidays my friends.

My area will probably start with mixed precipitation before turning to rain. Our biggest issue will be flooding from all the snow melt combined with the rain and frozen ground. I know that after the very wet snow last week (and rain is some portions of the state), I could hear the river that is 4 blocks away for a couple of days. And the drainage ditch at the side of my property was going pretty good too.

Guessing my garage will flood with nowhere for the water to run (no big deal). I'll have to put the long pipe on the outlet for the sump pump to get the water away from the house and then remember to pull it before the expected plummet into the teens Friday evening. Since it won't have time to dry, everything will become a skating rink.

All forecasts call for rain for us northeastern folks, followed by lots of wind and cold air.

I guess today would be a good day to pick up some more rock salt. I can't imagine 55° and heavy rain Friday turning into 10° by Saturday morning without a little bit of ice forming.

More likely a whole lot of ice!! Be prepared.

I am betting many in the east will be having lots of opportunity for scrouging firewood after this one.

I'm almost hoping that's the case :) The power company sent out an alert this morning via text and email about the coming storm. Depending on when the winds come through, the potential is definitely there to take down trees.

Yawn. Another stupid rain storm, what a waste of potential snow.
Hope those of you outside the snow barrier get a ton of white gold!

We're only expecting 3"-5" but it will be windy through Saturday. I'm putting the bucket on the skid steer tonight to deal with whatever comes. A guy called me today wanting a truckload of wood because he is expecting power to go out. Panic is good for business!

    I hadn't thought about preps.
Have wood I want to bring up, in case we get socked in later at the end of the year.
We went for the last bits of holiday food items . . . both food stores were NUTZ. Cashiers said between the holiday and the storm, it has been busy.
Will top off the fuel tomorrow. AND, yup tools ready for a little scrounging Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
I HOPE we get a whompin', snow of course.

Here's to everyone posting storm pics. And scrounge takes.

We aren't going to get much snow...maybe 2"-3". The forecast on that has been all over the place. The one thing that hasn't changed is that the cold and wind are going to be legit. Below 0 temps with 30MPH winds gusting to near 50. I believe that is really going to happen as the forecast hasn't changed any since last weekend.

I got my gas cans filled up and gave the generator a test run yesterday. All I need is enough juice to run the boiler pumps and a few other minor things
