Walked down in the woods this morning. Nice. Always. Wanted to check out the deadwood and dead poles. Lots of em. I think it's time to declare war on the peckers and "re-locate" the crowd a little. Take a look… 20" at the base, risky now to cut Here's just one example… getting started… 40' section of a dead pole was a reminder for me to pay attention to what's up above, because… … that top came off this 10' base section, from the wind. Glad I wasn't under it cutting… More critter damage. My poor trailer was porcupine "catnip" (glue) while up at our cabin… I can see that the woods "floor" is way too rocky to easily get my tractor to all areas. I was hoping to use the claw in many spots to move branches, rocks, etc… but, I'll get hung up on a rock or tear something expensive off the bottom of the JD. ATVs are ideal for this terrain. I've decided to just keep the tracks on the Suz (no tire punctures from the small stumps) and whittle out a decent path around the entire lot. Snow does a good job of filling in the sags between those rocks in the winter, making it much easier to slide out logs. That's my summah plan anyway… Ayuh.
There sure is a lot of dead standing "pecked" poles out your way. Fire up the saw and get at it or you will here those fellas knocking the hardwood in wooded harmony.
They already do, and it's easy to tell if they're peckerin' a dead pole or a live healthy tree. Problem is, they're extremely shy, and the slightest movement of anything… and, they're gone. Back within an hour sometimes.
I like em, the sound from a distance is kinda cool. Like Stinny said, you can tell when they are working on a live tree or a dead one. The dead ones are much more clear and distinct, the live is more of a thud, less of the sound travels.
Oh man.... Looks like fun ! Thats why i have been cutting dead standing in the winter to supplement the good wood. Keeps a clean woods... And pecker free
