This happens to an older couple in our area, no insurance help whatsoever. The Ford ranger is squished but the Chevy dump just has cab and box damage. I open my BIG FAT MOUTH and say if you find your screwed I'll clear it up. I don't charge people down on their luck and I'm not a tree businesses so.... A friendly gesture. I then fully @#$&ing EXPLAINED how I would get the dump out safely bla bla bla......
Call yesterday, yes please help..... OK Saturday, fine.
Call today, his son came up ....They borrowed a saw...... Started cutting what they could.......Then it teter tottered and flipped up on the dump box and landed on the hood.
What can we do to help ? He said.......

Nice of you to volunteer but if they want you to help out maybe they could wait for you to show up before they make things any worse.

Dirty Harry Callahan said it best "A man's got to know his limitations.... ;) "

Now I'm quite experienced in tree felling, using saws etc. Used to climb/prune a lot when younger, worked for small local tree service in late teens/early 20's.Still do a couple small jobs yearly for extra cash & if someone like a friend or family member needed a favor.

But if there's anything I don't feel comfortable with (especially now that I'm older & stamina/reflexes are not as good) I WONT DO IT.PERIOD.

Case in point is this huge old Mulberry in SE corner of my property - its growing in corner of 4 properties, but 90% is leaning heavily right over my saw shed, plus there's a power pole near it that has service to 6 different houses :bug:and wires going in all directions.

After Monday night's severe thunderstorms & 60-75 mph gusts over metro area I'm more than a bit nervous.....Called my tree service buddy (and part time free wood supplier) earlier today. He & his 3-4 man crew will piece down that big beast sometime next week, grind up everything wrist size or smaller & leave all the rest for me here :dex:Very fair price too, less than I had guessed.:picard:

    Sometimes good intentions go south.
A guy in town supposably hurt his back prepping his garage floor for a epoxy coating. When he was in the hospital his family and friends did it for him. I understand that he was quite surprised when they opened the door.... but his eyes kept looking at the containers of hardener on the bench.
People mean well wudaya gonna do.

Ya my experience is limited to Forest felling and open spaces, I won't touch anything close to hydro lines or houses. Unless it's small enough that I have push the way I want it to go.

So the majority of the damage was caused by the wind and other people tried to help ?
Otherwise, I really don't see what the problem is. Or if there is one.

The problem is that by them helping they took a limb that was just on the cab and box of the dump truck, cut what was holding it up and let it smash down on the undamaged portion of the truck. Also beforehand they cut off the substantial counterweight of limbwood that would of allowed me to easily lift it off the truck.

How does that prevent you from helping beyond that ?
So, you're saying you should have gotten there sooner ?
