7 year old granddaughter stopped by a week or so ago and was enthralled with these maracas that she found at the park that sound like rattle snakes and grow on trees. She even had 5 or 6 that she wouldn't leave without, believe me mom tried.  I made the mistake of telling her they are actually seeds in there that look like little beans and if they get planted they will grow into trees. Yesterday they stopped by and 3 maracas were opened and a sandwich baggie of beans are now available for planting and mom will have none of it after the shelling mess was left on her kitchen table one night.:emb: Amazing how them grandkids can make this cranky old man softer. Don't tell anyone that about me please! Anyway, I'm assuming some type of locust. Have any of you had luck starting one from seed, tips, tricks?

You are correct on them being Locust pods, likely Honey Locust. I'm sure they will grow from the seed as we have them growing like weeds here. Be careful, though, the thorny ones are NASTY. Look up some photos. They are good firewood, I just hate dealing with the daggers.
