Another beautiful day here in PA. Seized the opportunity to fall a pin oak at my parents neighbors property. It fell drama free. I have vid of that but dad wasn’t really pointing the phone right. Here’s some pics. Ready to buck. 24” bar. Much needed trigger time. Easily rolled them out of the woods. We will roll these up a ramp into my trailer to bring them home. Only about 100yds away from his wood area. Pile of limb wood. And dad whackin’ away at the poison vine on the next tree we’ll get. It’s ash. I have a vid uploading. Haven’t done one in a while so why not. Hope y’all had a great day and got some firewood’n in.
Looks like fun with dad and the saw. Took about ten minutes with the 365??? Gotta love when gravity is on your side.
My vid is 12 minutes so 10 of cutting is about right. After limbing the top, I had 38 paint marks at 16” lengths (50.6’). So I fell the tree and bucked it up on one tank of mix. Good mileage from a ported saw imo. I’ll take the 36” bar next time and get another round off the stump.
Is that a Husqvarna "multipurpose axe"? I like mine needs a new handle, used it as a pickaroon too much.
That oak gave you a good amount of firewood! Sweet. I'm surprised others didn't comment about the sweet odor from that pin oak. As for me, I don't mind it at all. There are very few trees I don't appreciate the scent.
I mentioned to dad that people say it smells like manure. Neither one of us thought it was unpleasant. We'll give it another sniff when it's time to split.
I used to always ride with dad to the sawmill to get sawdust for bedding in the barn...I'll never forget the oak smell at the mill...to me its the same smell whenever cutting any type of oak...only ever been around 1 or 2 that had anything other than that classic "oak" smell, but never thought they smelled like manure...one or two maybe had a bit of "cat pizz" twang to it...
Wet decaying red oak wood is manure funky imo. It makes my clothes reek after cutting. When I get in a confined space like my truck it’s really bad. Its different than the usual pin oak aroma. Manure, dirty azz, sewer, it smells bad. It has the funk until it dries out.
One time I had a puke-like scent from decayed RO. It was a hollowed out base that had rot you speak of. Never smelled it since. This pin was dead standing for some time. Crown limbs are beyond keeping. Was that cut live? Good to know. I'll measure moisture when we split it.
Sometimes you will find a hollow tree that coons can get in. Those do have a tendency to smell a bit.
