I got this ash from a tree that was cut down on the Towns property. The guys cutting it down asked me if I wanted the sweetgum , I said no, but that one of those trees that the lightning busted the top out of was an ash and that I would take it. He said that's ok they would leave it for me. I will back up, there was a thunderstorm a few weeks back that hit a few trees on the town property. The guys that were doing it know I can run a saw and cut a lot. They asked my opinion on cutting a large sweetgum that was struck. I went down there and the lighting busted the top of the ash out and ran down the sweetgum that was about 24" down by the stump, and busted the tree. It was split down through the center of the tree and I told them when you cut it you need to watch out on the back cut, cause if it's split all the way down w(I thought it was) it will split away and kick out and fall Barber chair is what you call it and what I told them it would do. I said what I would do is take a big strap and wrap around the tree right about 4ft up from the ground. They asked if I wanted to cut it. I said YEA, I love cutting big trees and this one was a challenge. There was a big power line kind of close that had to be avoided, but I don't think it would of hit it if I cut it straight to it. Here is the video. I wish I had two cameras , one that I could of run off my chest so you could see my view as well. The tree with the too knocked out to the left of the sweetgum is the ash I got.
The guys who were cleaning up the place. They wanted to pull it. It really was leaning that way and I don't think it made much difference. They live in town with me. Also on the fire department with me.
I forgot about it honestly on this one, but I didn't need it here. I used it earlier this summer messing with some oak that was 25 to 30" dbh though!! About the only way I could move it was with it
Nah. I didn't want anything for it. I could of got the wood either way. I wanted to cut the tree really. I ended up with a few smaller branches from the sweetgum. But I didn't want that huge thing. I didn't feel like noodeling 65ft of sweetgum
Most around me are to the point they are ready to fall over from decay. Won’t be long it’ll be a thing of the past.
There is actually like 10 in that clump of trees in the video. There is more ash in that small spot than I have seen anywhere around here.
Early on in the video I figured those guys thought they'd just yank it down. Great job.. and some fine ash is definitely good payment
