I’ve seen some standing here and there but never cut any. Came across this in the log pile. Is it persimmon?
Bark looks like it. Sort of reminds me of mature dogwood as well. Cant say ive ever seen persimmon in person.
Hey brother. Yes sir, that is persimmon. We cut some when we had the sawmill back in the '80's. Very hard wood when dried, makes great turning wood. Used to make wooden golf club heads. Might want to save it. Smelled like an ashtray when we sawed it. Heavy and dense. We have a couple nice ones on our place, they were big when I was a little boy, over 50 yrs ago.
I think so, but I have trouble telling Persimion from Black Tupelo... If it's Tupelo, it won't split very easily. Here's Black Tupelo...
Bark between the two appears simular to me... im curious how you can tell the difference? I have a bunch of what I think are Persimion trees... But always wondering if they might be Tupelo based on the bark only....
Tghis looks like persimmon to me. This, i was told is tupelo aka black gum when i scrounged it last Fall. I didnt know what i had at the time. Thanks FHC!
Brad, I have a book that shows that blocky bark for black gum/black Tupelo. When you google black Tupelo you see a variety of bark varieties... Many look like Persimion, some don't... Not sure what to say unless the bark changes that much with the age of the tree? Either way, I hope its Persimmin which would be a home run!
I was going by what i was told when i posted those pics. Could be a different variety in this area. The tree i scrounged was maybe 8" diameter.
