You have a thread about it, I recall. Ill need to go back and review it.

I may be coming down to 2 choices...... either a pacific energy or a vermomt castings. Both new, good deals.

Haven't seen much out there on V.C. since the last buy out. I'd still be concerned about the longevity of them. So I'd probably go with the P.E. between the two.

I like my PE T5 very much, but I've only run it one season and have no experience with VC.

I have a pe Vista insert and for its small size, it cranks out the heat.

Im on year 6, and my ss baffle warped, but allegedly it's lifetime warranty. I'm currently awaiting a reply from my pe rep in response to the pics I sent. So ill.be able to tell you how they handle customer issues shortly.

The PE stoves have a very good reputation. The Alderlea stoves are gorgeous, and they are great heaters.

I know Certified106 has a PE and believe he always has good to say and he seems to get some nice long burns.

What PE are you looking at? Specifically, Alderlea vs. Traditional? The fire boxes are the same , but the cast iron jacket changes it from a radiative heater to more of a convective heater.

The bottom line for me is you dont have to spend that much money for a good stove.
My PE did not work and I couldn't get any satisfaction from PE so I had to eat the stove.
My Drolet works like it supposed to, the PE did not.

So far so good with my T-5.. I did have an issue where the stove pipe would get too hot and adding some course steel wool to the air tube under the front air intake angle iron made a big difference..

Vermont Castings was a wonderful brand name in 1976 to about 1985, when they made these stately old school cast iron stoves. But the brand has changed hands and deteriorated over time. Their EPA stoves have a reputation of very high maintenance and associated costs for rebuilds.

Well seasoned, are you buying new? Talk to raybonz he's got one.

The Super27/T5 stoves are capable of some crazy long burns for a 2ish cu ft firebox. Pretty easy to control, too. I have tried to let mine get away before, and it always calms down as soon as I shut the air down. A secondary air control linked to the primary makes this happen. I think you'll be tickled after the little Jotul.

They do breathe easy. I have around 13' of pipe, and I will consider adding a key damper if I ever have to take it apart and clean it.

The 27 has side shields built onto the stove. The only place there is any more radiant heat is off the top.

Plenty of heat for cooking too.. Stove is running as I type this.. I also have the blower which does a good job getting the heat out when the weather is cold..

Sounds good. I was wondering how the overnight burns were. Advertised as 8hr max, but I suspect with all that fire brick, A fine bed of coals would be present after an overnight. Can anyone attest to the quality of the enamel? Also, The little ash door opening "seems" in my mind a little small and cumbersome. So you guys use it alot?

I never use the ash door.. Easy to just use shovel.. The bricks are soft pumice and break easy which is a problem in on the back wall where the logs hit when loading.. I replaced those with the heavy ceramic bricks I bought at TSC and they worked fine and won't break.. Rest of the pumice bricks are still in service.. I can't speak to the enamel as my T-5 is painted.. Oh and yes the burn times are very good with overnight burns easy to attain at least with hardwood.. NS loading is good so no logs rolling out problems.. I believe EW is ~15.5" and 18" NS

The ash dump is useless. Just shovel it.

Six to eight hours at WFO is about right, but lower burns can go 10-12 easy.

How many square feet are you heating? If I lived where you lived I'd be thinking go big at least as big as I could. It gets cold up there. I know I don't need to tell you that :) and the nights are long. With my old VC Resolute, if I got up at the crack of dawn and rushed to fill the stove before coffee (heaven forbid) I might be able to stoke it off the hot coals, but meanwhile the room would be cold.

Realize you may be constrained by room size, clearances etc..

I am really appreciating the 2.5cu ft of that Absolute Steel. My Fireview will give me overnight burns too, with a smaller box, but it's outside dimensions aren't much different than the Fireview and the AS has the option of rear or top exit flue and right or left loading door.
