Possums are wonderful animals. They eat insane amounts of ticks and other pest and are nearly entirely immune to rabies. We try to keep them around but help them stay out of trouble. The Helpful Opossum | Wildlife Medical Clinic at Illinois
There aren't a lot of cats around here the last 5 years or so. It's just a little bit bigger than what you'd find in a cat litter box. Some animals have some rather well worn trails thru the woods, some even share the ones I've made with the tractor. Light snow makes noticing what animals have been around a bit interesting. Still need to invest in a good trail cam again.
They will eat ticks that are on them when they're grooming themselves they don't actively hunt them. But they do eat other vermin.
A few nights ago our youngest dog caught up with a possum and it looks like he grabbed it by the tail as part of it was missing and there was blood everywhere. I got the dogs inside and waited about 5 minutes until the possum woke up and wandered off... a little shorter than before. Another possum encounter: when I was about 16 I ran over a possum with my 68 Camaro but didn't hit him with the tires. Feeling bad, I turned the car around and headed back with plans to put it out of its misery. I lined up my tires on one side and headed towards it. When I got about 20 ft. away it popped up and ran off the road. I had my two little sisters and one of their friends on board. I can still remember them freaking out when I turned around.
I have no problem with them either. They just seem to quietly go about their business without causing a fuss. Raccoons, on the other hand, are always causing some kind of trouble!
