Grabbed up one of my big saws and the ms170 to go cut down a couple of dead red oaks, the ms170 was for some trail maintenance and a little limbing. When I was done trimming up some brush the saw would not turn off and I couldn't choke it out either, had to remove the air breather cut the air off. So had to use the big saw the rest of the day. Using a big saw all day is harder than I remember. Got a lot done. Several logs and about a cord of firewood. Only brought one load out, it started sleeting and snowing here pretty good was hurting my face and ears. Now off for some warm vegetable soup and a nice hot bath in the whirlpool.
Looks like a good load of wood. Seems like I read that a lot of members are cutting dead standing oak. Is something killing the oak trees? I’m not seeing it here.
I when a guy cutting trees says they are out of shape! What about these younger generations.. afraid to be outside
Looks like some good haul there WH! Perhaps like others, I split hard with the machine...point being to put up the wood. But unless the require the machine, from here on out for the winter, what I bring back in rounds will be done by hand. The shirt will come off, and the neighbors will cringe. But by hand as often as I can, just to stay in shape. Sca
Sounds like you could have a wire that came off the kill switch or a screw come loose on the ground. Also a broken wire. Some nice logs for sure.
Around here, midatlantic (PA, MD, VA, DE and NY) it seems to be mostly affecting the chestnut oaks over the last 10 yrs. I had a forester out on my property a few years ago and he wasn't sure what was going on, but used the "gypsy moths" as a standard fall back. I wonder if anything has become more clear lately.
I was told it is a blight of some sort. Leaves in the spring, dead by fall and the bark falls off real soon. Outer sap ring seems to rot real fast also.
If you got a cord cut up... I would welcome a dip in a hot tub also... Really nice looking place you have there WH...
I believe it's a linkage issue. Will check it out later in the week and sharpen up a few chains and do some maintenance work and clean the air filters.
Don't feel too bad Ward Hoarder , if I put 4-5 hours on the bigger saws I feel it too, at least we can still do it. Oak Wilt is getting pretty bad here too, spreads through the roots & insects carry it into damaged trees. Seems the worst i the Reds. Not good.
The teen and I got out around 0700 today, 30*. Sweatshirts came off, t shirts stayed on. Split a buncha poplar, tulip, and maple. Stacked what we could, but need a separate stack for the softwoods. Sca
We also found out our wood stove would do this fairly handily. First firing this morning got 'er up to 500*, and stove coffee to go with it. Happy I am. Sca
Too bad about the 170. I like mine for limbing/smalls too. Purchased new in April. Had issues in August and bought my 201 rear handle to replace it. Ive really fallen in love with one as lumbering around with a bigger saw can and does get tiring. I think its more of getting old as much as we hate to admit it. Like amateur cutter said, at least we can still do it. Some nice wood from your hard work! Great pic SCA! Logs beware! Same down here as i did a couple hours of splitting myself yesterday Feeling it this morning.
Connecticut and Rhode island have been hit by gypsy moths in recent years. Bare trees in the late Spring when they've eaten all the leaves. Oak skeletons abound. Some areas real bad.
