On thursday I finished cuttin up the top on one of the big oaks down the road then me and dad went after the trunk. It's one of the bigger trees back there and it really made the tires on the forklift squat . I counted 80 rings to the heartwood and then they got hard to see. My supervisor checking on the log placement Some of the tops
Hey… if we had some eggs, we could have some ham & eggs… if we had some ham… OK, I need another coffee…
Looks like it was a tall straight one perfect for splitting! The big rounds are going to be heavy! Don't bust anything important moving them around.... Just sayin...
Got two more for the pile on friday. Just gonna keep stackin the bigguns up until i get the smaller stuff processed.
Wow, look at all that level ground. I moved from NE Ohio to Pittsburgh a couple of years ago, and had almost forgotten what it's like to put things down and not have them immediately start rolling or sliding.
Love those big Oaks. Tree service contact has another huge old White Oak coming down a few blocks from me -Drove by there Friday afternoon & its still there - topped out about 30 feet up now,all smaller branches gone, twin leaders look to be 15"-18" each at the remaining top.Top of tree is less than 2 feet from gutter/edge of roof on 100 yr old 3 story brick house on narrow grassy strip next to narrow driveway between 2 buildings.I see why the owners wanted it gone. He's been busy with other jobs recently + removing that old beast is like threading a needle of a running sewing machine - takes more care piecing it down in such a tight spot Don't have room in yard for much now - maybe 2 p/u loads if I shift things around a bit more.Still am tempted to give him a call for some more though....Curious to see if that main 36" trunk is sound enough for some wide slabs...
Now that kind of wood is justification for having heavy equipment. There isn't any back that can take the beating of handling that huge stuff. One wrong move and you are laid up for months or worse. How much wood will you get from those heavy logs?
