With a little luck I might even live long enough to see it seasoned sufficiently to place in my stove. That's a big old white oak in the background with a treehouse that was started over 20 years ago and never finished.
Let's see, a couple hours to c/s/s all that, 2-3 years to get it dry, then a couple months to burn it all up. Where's the justice? Nice firewood, absotutely, and nice stack.
Looks like 3 GMA pallets, so 12'. Unless there's a ton of space in between the rows that I can't see, that's closer to 1.25 - 1.5 cord.
Yes, 3 - 48x42 pallets , so 12 feet long. Almost 4 feet high. There's just two rows. Nominal 16" length splits. I try to leave a nice air gap between them. This end of the stack has shorties on the back side, so peeking through the slats it might look like three rows. Tree was cut down by "expert arborists" next door, took quite a while of recutting mostly odd-ball sizes for my neighbor two years ago. I got the pile of wood after he cut the lawn around the pile all Summer. I stacked the rounds up and it has been sitting with red oak stacked in front of it. I'm finally cleaning up a bunch of oak I got and just dumped in a pile. All cut to oddball lengths by "landscapers" . I figure 12x4x2.6=124.8
Shot with a 10mm lens for anyone noticing the extreme horizon lines and the upright skid on the end appearing "twisted". It's actually quite flat. Makes the 12 feet appear a deceptively lot longer than it is.
I guess the middle stringer is hiding the gap in the middle. 1 cord of white oak is about as good at 1.5 cord of a lot of other wood...just takes less work to make and takes up less space when you're done. You do have to wait a while, but white oak gives up its moisture quicker than red oak....2 years should be plenty.
Nice work Bill. The wait will be worth it. I'm burning 2-3yr old white oak right now and it is a dream. 3 splits of oak put out so much more heat/BTUs than a 3 similar sized splits of fir or soft maple . The difference in heat output and duration is VERY noticeable.
'shorties' or 'chunks' on that end. really did want the wind to blow thru better but I had to put them someplace. some of this was single stacked in the woods on top of a hill but never seeing sun and they were all the same relative weight of the stuff I cut to proper lengths and split Sunday. Restacked in the sun. On pallets. I've got about one more cord of red oak in rounds that needs splitting and stacking. ------------------------------------ Red oak rounds that are next up: Where I keep fit.
White oak is one of the "Top Dogs" of fire wood. Jealousy headed your way from here ** LOL Just a little tougher to split.
The oak is ok to split, better than others for sure. It's the waiting game we have to play to actually use it thats a PIA.
Just cut a whole heap of white and red oak myself last weekend, Bill......and yes, that white oak smells heavenly both when splitting AND burning it!
Oh, THERE you are. Hiding behind a computer screen and up in trees makes Scotty a dull boy. Glad you had a minute to pop in Scott. Still lovin' the site BTW.
