Had an errand before coming home and had i not this would not have been found. Spotted and recognized what it was right away...honey locust! RARE score for me. Slam on the brakes and back up, get out and homeowner knew why i stopped from the splits in back of the PU. Got the okay to cut and take. Tree service will finish tomorrow as another tree (not HL) partly taken down. Common yard tree, but seldom scrounged. Dont know if they grow wild in these parts. 24" spar to come down yet. The elderly gentleman who owns the house planted it when house was built. I spoke with his son and grandson in the yard. More pics to follow.
Some guys have all the luck As far as I know, the eastern native range for the wild thorny kind only stretches into Pennsylvania and parts of New York State. I think what you’ve got is even better, since you don’t have to deal with those massive thorns. Very cool score Brad
Imagine this hoarders excitement level when i saw what it was. I passed two very fresh scores prior to this today. Stopped at one...some okay Norway maple right down the street from me and one i passed a couple blocks before this...big azz yard sugar maple being taken down, then this. I believe this 24" is the largest ive ever seen. Deceiving from the road.
My area has quite a few sunburst honey locusts that I have been able to acquire wood from, either trimming up or taking down. Excellent firewood, you couldn't ask for much better.
What a fiasco today was. I get there around ten. All the HL on the ground was gone...grapple truck had come from tree service. Missed by a couple minutes. A call was made and he comes back. I ask if he can unload there...NO. Can you bring them to my storage? 20 minutes away and other direction...$20 makes him say yes. Give him the address and will meet him there. I get there, wait ten minutes and think he blew me off (i hadnt given him the $20 yet) so i leave. Im a couple minutes up the road and there he is at a light in major intersection. Took me two minutes to get turned around. My friend said he was there briefly, pointed to his watch and left. I was piZZed! Wanna ruin my day, take away my primo, rarely scored load of HL! Went back to score and they would be done by two. Came back again as they were just finishing. Thanks to Eric Wanderweg for letting me vent in a text. Pics to be posted shortly.
Spar on ground intact at two PM. Guy using a 261 to slice cookies off the stump. They left and the 500i and I took over. Had to section into sixths. Most with Isocore, some noodled. Heavier than oak! Reminded me of mulberry color when fresh split. I spoke with elderly homeowners and she mentioned sunburst HL as JPDavis did above. Never have heard of it and dont know if there are different yard varieties. Tree planted in early 1970's. Just the big crotch section the only PITA log HEAVY load! I thought of taking some of the other tree to cheer myself up until i found out it was sweet gum!
Sorry to hear that Brad. Buy a travel cup so you can take the coffee with ya. I know about those slow mornings. At least you got some.
Honestly I think you dodged a bullet with that HL. I've have had it c+s+s on concrete for 3 years and it barely burned. It needed another year to season at least.
