I have an '80's Vent-A-Hood Range hood, with two exhaust fans, one runs CW the other CCW. There is a two speed switch to control the fan speed of both motors together. Trouble is the "Lo" speed is almost as high as the "Hi" speed. I like the "Hi" speed, for quickly clearing out cooking smells, but I want a real "Lo" speed that moves air, but isn't as noisy as the "Hi". Any ideas what I can do? Is the switch faulty? I've seen rheostat kits for fireplace insert fans--would one of those work?

Sounds like the switch assembly has gone south, likely a burned out or shorted resitor or coil in there. rheostat might work but best see whats there just in case there might be a fire hazard from a short. Have seen connections burn off or crimped on connectors where the wire broke cause that sort of thing. Other possibilty is that the motor is a dual winding and that the low is gone south.

There are two motors and both are operated from the same switch. The leads to the switch are in good shape and not burned. The switch is just a small 3-way rocker switch.

should be able to source a switch. sounds like a less than $10 fix
