Just had one of those moments. Reading a post that referenced the BTU chart. I clicked on the link and saw the chart also had dry weight per cord for different species. Checking White Oak, I see 3800lb or so. Remembering sitting on the Kubota, peeved that the loader won't budge the pallet full of White Oak splits I just got done stacking. Did a little more work with dimensions being added into my favorite cord calculator site and wala! .56 cords of White Oak tips the scales at more than the lift capacity of the loader. Now I get it.
Oak is heavy stuff. I was splitting some over the weekend and ended up doing it all with the splitter in vertical mode. Normally with ash I would have left it horizontal but I probably would have thrown out my back with those oak rounds!
I dropped a pin oak this afternoon, and yep- the splitter will be going vert. Say Backwoods Savage, got an extra milk crate I can get a hold of... by tomorrow afternoon?
