Hey guys, I need your opinion. I am working on a Stihl 036 that will need a new clutch assembly and drum. The dealer wants $65 for the OEM drum and bearing. I have found aftermarket (Oregon) for $25 + shipping. Has anyone tried aftermarket parts? The difference in price has me worried.
Yep...I'm wondering if it was a mistake. Seems like you should get the clutch, drum, sprocket and bearing for that monty
oregon drums are nice, especially for the money. i like to run them on my 372's because they have cooling holes that help when you run bars. some of the other brands of aftermarket things I'm still leary of
Oregon should be fine for you. I won a few auctions for Huztl drums and bearings... they look "ok" but I haven't measured them up yet. I did have one rim sprocket (no idea where it came from) that just wasn't right. It was AM and came on one of my parts saws. For the 036-- are you getting the larger clutch drum and needle bearing? There are two sizes and you'd probably want the larger one. Weedeaterman is an option and has free shipping (not sure if he has that kit, though).
Oregon wouldn't bother me for these parts either, but I have also had good luck finding the OEM versi0ns on eBay. Depending on how quickly you're going at the project, you could set up a search and see what's offered. Here's a .325 kit that recently went for $18.50 shipped. Here's a 3/8" kit currently at $21.95 shipped with no bids, but I can't tell whether it includes the bearing. According to the IPL that kit should include the sprocket, drum, e-clip, washer and bearing, but I'd ask the seller to be sure since it's been opened.
I put an AM clutch / drum / rim on my 346XP last year; the price was just too good. So far, no complaints.
Thanks everyone for the input. Does anyone have the IPL for the 036? I have found a couple part numbers for the clutch assembly, 1125-160-2051 and 1125-160-2052 Any idea which p/n is correct?
I actually come up with 1125-160-2005. It will depend on which version of the IPL you have, how up-to-date it is. All three are good numbers, you should be able to give it to your Stihl dealer, and their system should in turn point them to the latest part number.
Sounds like the typical Stihl, (STEAL), deal???? Parts are so outrageous, coupled with John Deere hourly shop rates, the saws under $500 are throwaways.
