Looks pretty awesome. Daughter pointed it out. Ever seent this before? It’s been sitting in the round for 20 weeks. Pretty sure it’s a Pinn.
Its the tannins... if you split red oak varieties when they are wet/green your hands get all sorta stained up as well.
Same here on the cottonwood. Never seen any kind of oak with bark like that around here...definitely not pin oak in my area.
Could be chestnut oak... http://forestry.ohiodnr.gov/chestnutoak Its mature bark is different than any other Oak, having ridges that are triangular in cross-section, with deep furrows in-between. Even with age, Chestnut Oak retains the light gray to medium gray color of its bark that is characteristic of the White Oak group.
Spent a summer working on a portable band saw mill as a teenager. The combination of oak, steel band saw blades and cooling water would staine my hands purple. Tough to get off.
Completely respecting your identification, but as a lesson for me : what makes it definitely not Burr ? I thought my lot was a mix of Burr and Pin...

Agree it’s chestnut oak - considered a white oak variety. Looks like that one grew very slowly. You should be able to tell them apart easily when the leaves come in. Bur oak (white) Pin oak (red) Chestnut oak (white)
