Lost a cat last year, then have had my trash turned over. At first I thought maybe a coon, but then while I was bird watching I saw this big fisher cat come crawling over a rise in the woods off the power line. I was surprised how large it was. And then be bold enough to come into the yard. No idea how to deal with this. I have two large dogs that I do have outside when the weather is good. When I go off, I put the dogs in a kennel area with a 5 foot fence. I don't seem to have an issue with anything bothering stuff in the kennel.
Any ideas about how to deal with these animals?

When you say fisher cat… do you mean a fisher? Or, some kind of cat? Never heard the 2 names together. If it's a fisher, they can be nasty SOBs and very aggressive. I'm thinking' a lead pill delivered at about 3000 feet per second ought to cure the problem.

Could set some type of cage trap too… if you catch him, keep yer fingers away from the cage… Bet he'd put on quite a show.

Have only seen 2 in Maine. They were darker/black in color… and, I see they were fisher cats. Never heard cats before, but they sure do climb trees like em'.

We had one go across the woods on the south side of our house a few winters back. that's the only time we've seen one.

That's prolly a good thing. Some friends who do a lot of hunting in western Maine have talked about their coon, bear and coyote dogs occasionally coming across fishers. I guess they'll fight dogs and do plenty of damage, every time. The dogs learn to keep their distance fast.

That's the bugger that I saw here. Nasty thing. I just don't understand it. Never had them around here that I knew of, now these. Used to see rabbits and pheasants, woodcock, ducks, coons, skunks etc. Now we have Turkeys, coyotes, bobcats, buzzards, and now this fisher cat.

Nasty animals, they're about the only animal that will eat a porcupine.

I guess most of the turkeys are fast enough getting airborne to beat all these new predators. There's an awful lot of turkeys. Coyotes are multiplying by our cabin. And, a neighbor here said a coyote was walking down the road at around 5 PM one day. They are getting very used to humans and are not afraid. Good luck with your new buddy Larry. And, ya never know… maybe he'll head off to better grub somewhere else.

3o years ago there were lots of porcupines around the area of our camp in VT. Since the return of the fisher cats I haven't seen one, nor has my car been gnawed upon, nor any trees stripped of bark. I'll take the fisher cats.

To paraphrase the immortal words of Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.: "Rat---tat-tat-tat---tat-tat-tat-- like that....and I never hesitate to put a Fisher on his back." I'd just whack it and be done if is causing trouble.

Come to think of it, I haven't had to pull quills from my dogs for a long time. I wish the fisher cat would get the ground hog that ate my garden last year.

you'd swear they are related to the badger family. We have a few reports of them around these parts now. They like chickens, will burrow a couple feet under the fence to get at them.

They are related to badgers, all in the weasel family. I believe otters, minks, ferrets and a few others also.

We have some big azz pine around here so I'm not sure the fisher is around.
