This evolved from my last FBM score. Really have taken a liking to red cedar since i saw it milled last year. He had some bigger cedar i took for buzz-saw's mill. Hurt my thumb soon after and he had rest of dropped wood hauled away including several nice logs i put aside for the mill. He was taking down more trees including cedar. The trees were small, and they had piled a mound of mostly down/dead cedar with a mini skidder. Pulled two loads of mill logs, maybe a PU total of red maple, ash & cherry bucked rounds and at least a couple loads of 8' pieces of cedar there for me the get yet. I have to figure where im going to put this at storage. Used the top handles being down one thumb. He was cleaning up this weekend so had to get it done the past couple days. Am i crazy for hoarding this...dont know, but am i a crazy hoarder? Well you all know the answer to this!
I cut down a cedar in the small rural cemetery across from my house (per town board wishes) and it went through my wood stove no problemo!
Eastern Red Cedar Considering the project I’m working on right now, those cedar poles look awesome. If I were you I would’ve scarfed them up too. Never know when you’ll find a use for them. Besides, how often does the opportunity come to score that much in one fell swoop? The only stuff I’ve come across was dead, on the ground, and I had to work hard to retrieve it. Oh and the cherry, ash and maple is definitely an added bonus
My thoughts exactly. Funny as your project was the first thing i though of when i saw the log deck of them. They were scattered about his back woods and the guy did a nice job piling them up. Easy is always a plus on a score. Cutting off all the little spike limbs was the "hardest" part of harvesting them. I wont have the chance to get them out u til this week as busy this weekend. Hoping they were carefully moved as the homeowner had more clean up happening this weekend Still POed about the cedar they tossed that i put aside. Some bigger diameter logs as pictured.
Mmmm mmmm! I can smell that from here! Its always good to have some softwood to mix with the hardwood. That's a score!
Got back today. One good load including a few hardwood logs. He felled more cedars and didnt chip them. Loaded as is. Longest log ive ever had on the PU. Luckily buzz-saw's place was close by. Skid marks...FHC style! First load at my storage. He has more hardwood for me to take and more trees to fell so i'll be back!
Last time i cut some wood here last week i asked about the mountain of wood chips which were mostly red cedar. He said take all i want. He was bringing them to the dump. Couple loads here and a load yesterday to step daughter for little ones swings. Not something you see everyday. Looks like Flora approves! More there and may grab another load.
Havent been back here since i got chips. He hadnt cut more trees and i got the okay to do so. Felled a 14" DBH black birch (landed it right in his brush pile) and a small red maple. Not quite a PU full. (some was unloaded when i took pics) Some cedar and hardwood left which ill get next week.
It was either a new one or two rolls of duct tape to fix the old one. Im still reeling from spending the $20 for it. Need some Stihl stickers for it.
I use this for a saw box. Plenty of room with compartments to hold chains. And, it has the correct name!
