I was walking the dog this morning, and looking at my neighbor's trees along the way. Several of my neighbors have English Walnut trees in their yard, and they all seem to be struggling this year. The leaves are very spares, basically only in the upper crown. I don't see any other obvious damage to the trees, but every single one seems to be suffering the same condition. Wonder if it will clear up next year?
Im not sure of species but I have walnut trees in my yard and they are doing good. Matter of fact i had a couple of branches break out during a storm because there was so many walnuts on them.
English walnuts can't take too harsh of a winter, which is why we don't have any in our neck of the woods. Last winter was very harsh.
Ah that makes sense - because its actually native to central Asia - aka "Persian" walnut. The black walnuts are fine; I just wish I had some on my property . I'm trying to reintroduce them into the mix - planted a couple from Arbor Day Foundation, and I've been collecting some from the local trees when I walk the dog.
We don't need black walnuts on our property-- there are many around here that no one wants, we can pick them up off Dad's neighbours property. Got to talk to the guys again anyway, he's got a small woods that I cut in two years ago. Want to get some cedar out of there for grill planks and for milling.
Yeah I don't want any in the main part of the yard - they drop too much stuff that you can't mow. Although I had a volunteer pop up in the front yard this year and I've been thinking about keeping it. I have a nice mix of lumber trees in the woods; I planted a few cedars too - didn't have any of those either.
Found this on the net Shawn. http://www.ehow.com/info_7978120_walnut-tree-problems.html Was told by someone this is a pignut in my yard? but pretty sure its a shagbark? anyways its dropping a ton of nuts this year.
Well on second thought... Shagbark nuts are normally larger, and almost have a "peeled orange" shape to them. Is that a small nut? That could be pignut after all.
Well the bark says pignut. http://www.thejump.net/hunting/plant-id/pignut-hickory.htm Are the nuts usually pear-shaped? http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/extension/4h/trees/Pignut_hickory/index.html
Just looking at that first picture I would say shagbark but after you posted the others, I say pignut.
Thanks guys! pignut it is. Even if i wanted the nuts the critters have them gobbled up before they hit the ground Not my beer Slim
