I have a Quadra-Fire 51-1 ACC wood burning insert. We had it serviced last week and the technician noticed two of the bolts snapped that hold up the tube support bracket. I planned on drilling out and tapping the holes. The first one went pretty well. The second was a disaster. Snapped a high speed bit in the hole, and couldn't drill it out. We'll see how it holds with only 2 bolts instead of 3. We started the stove today and I will consult the manufacturer about drilling a new hole.
can you wack the drill piece with a center punch? maybe from the other side? What about drilling a new hole in the bracket and sidewall, or in a slightly different position if the bracket hole is oval not round? Is there a way to drill a hole under where the bracket should be, and use a bolt/screw with a big enough head to hold the bracket up and in, without drilling a new hole in the bracket?
I like to weld a nut on to the broken off bolt, especially in a firebox application like that...works really well...smoke goes right up the chimney too...only have to set up blankets/shields to block sparks if doing it in the house...which works best when mama is gone
I was able to center punch both. First one wasn't so bad. I was able to step up to the correct size to tap it. I was so close on the second hole, two bits away from the right size hole. I'm going to email the manufacturer to see if I can drill a new hole without messing anything up. Yeah if I have the room I do the same thing. This space didn't allow me to do that. I'm probably going to drill a new hole.
