The "cats' dupa" IMNTBHO!!! I just love it as I've just put my 2nd load of chunks/uglies/cookies into my Englander 13NC for this year............................Mainly just to take the dampness out of the house. Been real, real mild here so far. For those not familiar with this stove, it's the little brother that "no one talks about" to the Englander 30NC. It's firebox is only half as large (1.8cu.ft.), but it's a very competent heater, no doubt about that!! You cannot load it NS with "normal" firewood; unless you cut your firewood at 10" or so. Because the firebox is so shallow, one has to think about how to load wood to get the most in there when loading EW, or you risk a collapse of your burning wood falling against the glass. Hence; it's can be a chore, bordering on impossible at times, to load enough wood for long (overnight) burns. Because of this, many of my loads in this stove tend to be sort of "triangle" shaped with the hypotenuse of the triangle kinda facing the topside of the the door. I do realize that if I could square split all my wood that would help a bunch with filling the box fuller (a more square shaped load), and help from keeping wood from falling into the glass...................but that'd be almost impossible with the wood I scrounge up!! Even my "straight" wood looks like many of y'all's uglies!!!! Like I said in my 1st paragraph; I'm burning the chunks, uglies and cookies now. Most of these I can get fit into the 13NC in a NS fashion, which really allows me to fill/pack the firebox......................much more than I can usually with my 16-18" splits..................and not have to worry about wood falling into the glass!! Getting crazy long burns............even with mostly the box elder I'm burning. Granted, the burn time is due to the mild weather, and less draft, but........................... If at all possible, my next stove will be one that can be loaded NS...................or else I need to find a way to process and store wood that's 10" long!!! Just saying, not arguing here of course!!
Yep, just cut down all that stuff you have. I've tried the E/W thing in the 30, but I don't like it much. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I feel like I have to limit stacking too high in front or the wood will fall into the glass. With the "doghouse" blowtorch, that tends to undermine the wood in front and makes it collapse.
I have been very pleased with the north south arrangement since we installed the Drolet Myriad. No longer do hot coals try to tumble out of the stove!
My splits are only 16", yet I still get some ash and bits of coals just inside the door and on top of the gasket along the bottom of the door. Must be all the little explosions in there.
Side door loading, east west, no worries about the glass in the front. Just sayin! How about some pics of this "so called" 13NC ???
Such a clean home/hearth with the wood stove and dogs. Where are the bark chips and ashes from the stove? LOL my pellet stove isnt even that clean.
That firebox looks bigger than 1.8??? Love the big beefy hearth, looks great. LOL!! I was staring at that first pic for quite a while before scrolling down and figuring out what was going on!@! The dogs "shadow" wasn't matching what the actual dog was doing.. I was saying "what the heck.... ??" Then I scrolled down and figured out the rug has the dog on it... that's awesome, did you realize the dog was on the dog ... ?
Thanks for the kind words. Looks nicer than it is. The pix with the dogs were taken this past June.............after my girls earned their TITLE ribbons..............and then I just had to take a picture of their sire also!!!! The "action" shot is an archive photo from last burning season. As I said, my little stove is awesome.......................just wish it were larger..................... 6-8 hours of "USEABLE" heat tops..........less in real cold weather. I do not have a well insulated house either. I've got plenty of attic insulation, as I added it myself, but the walls are the killer here at my dump. I didn't realize this until I started remodeling my master bath................some of the "bays" between wall/jack studs had no insulation in them!!!!!! And I ain't about to gut the whole house to find out what I've got..............I'm gonna cut more wood, put the plastic on the windows over Winter, and hope for the best.
MightyWhitey , what happens if a log rolls on to the glass? My lil NC13 is on the floor so I just light it up and leave it. Also we DO NOT get 6-8 hour burns, more like 4. That said we have only been using it when its cold, wind guaranteed, and only tinder dry pine....
Notice that I said "usable heat"!!!! That varies with outside temps!!! If it's in the mid/upper 40's and rainy/overcast outside, and the house on the inside is running low/mid 60's.....................I'll start a fire to ward off the dampness that sets into the house. At those outside temps, and with the"quicky" stove start up to normal temperatures..................my house is much, much warmer within 1.5 hours. Just like yesterday....................twas really damp outside, temps around 5o*F, but it "felt" cold in my house. Lit my stove with the quicky load and an hour later the chill was gone. Just my "quickly" load raised my indoor temps almost 10*F in 1.5 hours. My real load after that had the stove room at over 80*F and the rest of the house at the low/mid 70's!!! Now on a day in the middle of Winter where the temps are not above 20 or even less.......................................or where the outside temps haven't been above freezing and/or without sun for days.......................................this is where my 13NC gets worked. Sometimes, I cannot let the coaling stage of burning be completed due to the need for heat and to keep the furnace from kicking on. It's on days like this where I need to time when I leave for work (self-employed) and go to bed (so I don't have to reload the stove in the middle of the night) so that I have coals to start a new fire and not have resort to a cold stove start. Sometimes I'm having to sacrifice good hot coals for new wood..............with the 30NC, I don't think I'd have this problem due to the larger firebox.
Doesn't the 13i have the "doghouse"? It's the little "bump" right inside the door. It's fed by a couple holes behind the front legs on the 30, and always "on". No regulation. Acts like a venturi and accelerates the air coming in to act like a blowtorch, which burns holes through the wood in it's path.
