Ive had this big pile of red oak in my PA since i scrounged it last Fall from all the Asplundh cutting nearby. I guess too much wood too fast had me putting off splitting it. Rain wasnt too bad, (on and off brief spits) and i opted to get some SS done today. Was planning on a lazy day inside.
Split about 3/4 cord. Guess the hardest thing is getting started.
First two pics before. You can see the pile of splits starting to mound in the very back of the first pic. IMG_2394.JPG IMG_2395.JPG
When i finished. Was running out of gas and rain got heavier. IMG_2397.JPG
Decent pile of splits. Forgot how easy straight grained red oak splits. X27 split 95%+ of it. Only wished it seasoned faster. Ill keep adding to the split mound. Just starting to get moldy in spots. IMG_2396.JPG
After all, why do today what you can put off til tomorrow!

At the rate you split there's no worries about rust forming on those wet axes.

Yah i shouldve had it SS a long time ago but i guess the overwhelmed feeling made me put it off. Plus making more room to stack it. I guess its me being lazy and all that nice oak i couldnt say no to and had the time to grab it.
I imagine oak gets stuff growing on it rather fast down your way. You folks having your share of rain too.

Way to go bud, nice pics. I just dropped a big red oak on my land, no hurry to split it iv been way to busy getting dead standing. I cut a load of red pine logs today to replace the campfire wood i sold.

    Nicely done

I"ve left rounds of red oak sit stacked until I was ready to split them, as room for the splits came up, I've left the rounds in place for up to a couple of years... it still hand splits just as nicely

Brad, you’re not convincing any of us that you were truly planning on a lazy day inside. Even if you did have that plan, I see it didn’t last long, did it? :lol:I know the feeling though. Whenever I have it and decide instead to go get something done, I end up feeling better. Probably the same with you I imagine. Awesome pics and nothing like a growing pile of splits!

Nice work buZZsaw BRAD ! I split about a cord today myself. Like Haftacut said, sitting around is just too hard. Especially today, sunny & 60!

I know what you mean. I lost a massive oak a year ago and I’m finally getting the last cord or two split and stacked.

May oak is way too knarly to hand split. Even with my hydraulic splitter, it’s messy at times.
