First day without one for 3 months. Its not quite spring yet but its a glorious day here in Tassie! I went the whole of this winter so far on not just uglies but fuglies!
So winter is winding down in Tasmania and spring is on the way. Here in Michigan it's the hottest month of the year. Too hot to cut firewood. But fall is my favorite season and it is approaching quickly. Leaves will start changing color and the urge to be in the woods will be too strong to ignore.
Holy ..... ! Do you really live on the Island of Tasmania off of Australia? How big is that Island? How far of a boat ride to Australia? Do they have a ferry that goes everyday? What kind of trees are the most prevalent there? Sorry about all the questions. Good to have on board Tasmania.
Hey Tas, haven't seen you around much.....so you are winding down and in a few months we will be winding up.
Yeah I live down here. Its a reasonable size for an island. Here's a bit of info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasmania There's a big ferry that takes 12 hours that goes each day to Victoria which you can take your car or semi-trailer if you are in business etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Spirit_of_Tasmania_II Almost all of our trees are hardwood species. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atherosperma https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stringybark This is most common for firewood and easy to get and there are heaps of these species. There are about a thousand different types of "gum trees" which are fantastic for firewood also. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus_coccifera https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eucalyptus#Tall_timber There are plenty of wallabies and fallow deer to shoot here although there is tagging system or quota for deer. The fishing is top class with good cold water fish and plenty of trout if you like fly fishing. The temperature is not as cold as the northern USA and half the island is a national park or world heritage area. Anyone with a pulse can easily feed and look after themselves here and the cost of living is not as exorbitant as it is on the mainland and that's why I moved here from Sydney years ago.
Yeah spring is in the air and it will be gardening time very soon. I got some sleepers to make a dozen big raised garden beds which is a task for this year and then I will start planting some veggies and do some dehydrated foods. Im looking forward to trial and erroring my way into being 80% self-sufficient in a few years time.
I have been looking in from time to time but ive been working pretty hard lately so haven't posted much. We probably burn 24/7/365 here on the forum with all the members.
I read up on your island and it sounds like a very nice place to put down roots. No fire here today, either, its going to be 90 degrees F and plenty humid.
