I found a good marketplace listing, that is less than a 1/2 mile from my house, says it is all oak, wants 60 bucks a truckload, and won't come down even if I took it all. I am debating if I want to pay 120 bucks for 2 truckloads of unsplit rounds, that I might have to trim down. I can get a cord of oak, split and dried for less than 220. I usually don't buy wood at all, but free stuff is scarce this year. Opinions? Screenshot_20231014_201355_Facebook.jpg Screenshot_20231014_201406_Facebook.jpg

There’s something to be said for cherry-picking the best rounds for one truckload of you get there early.

Personally I find it almost offensive that they won’t give you a bulk rate.

Also, a half mile from home and if you can pull your rig right up…those things make it much more appealing.

Price seems steep to me.. considering your effort, and the odd cuts.

Had a talk with my neighbor a few yrs back when he had his property timbered.. a LOT of oak tops.. he said sure.. $50/face cord.. I do the work.

I'd be temped to roll in with a dump truck and take it all for $60

I personally would pass. Too many free scores within striking distance.

If that's all you have on the buffet right now I would cherry pick the best ones and stack a nice load.

That sounds like a plan. I might have access to one.

How bad do you need it? Oak is great fuel and if I really, really needed firewood I suppose I’d drop $60 for a heaping load (quarter or half the rounds on site to fit more) Murphy’s Law though, throw money at that venture and some huge score will pop up for free next week :picard: Holidays are coming up quick too so I imagine that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Let it sit and keep an eye on it since it’s so close. If most of it is still there in a month offer him $100 -$120 for the whole pile

My opinion is buy the split wood.
$220 cord for oak and I'll hang up my saw.

I don't really need it. I have enough for 2 years that is split now, and maybe another year of unsplit. I just like to have more. I might wait on it.

Like Sandhillbilly said let it sit. The longer it's there the cheaper it gets . Sits there long enough it'll be free. If it's all gone you have reserves at home.

Guessing you would have trouble getting more than a half cord per load so I'm with the majority and say let it sit and see what happens, but I'm not hurting for free wood. Now, if it was HVBW, that would be a different story.

I would pass. A neighbor had humongous white oak rounds that he cut from trees next to his house that had to go and he tried to sell for something crazy, like $20/round. I told him I'd be glad to haul it off for him but from my perspective, why should I pay for it, I can get free wood all over the place and it would be work to deal with those huge, heavy rounds, and haul them off. He saw dollar signs. He got $0, it rotted in place over the next few years. It was great wood, I actually wouldn't have objected to giving him a little just because it was great wood and close by and I could pull right up to it and it would have saved me gas money and my time of bucking a tree into rounds but I didn't care for his attitude, lol, so, I just let it go and watched it rot.

I dont pay for wood either so i would pass, but in your case thats a tough call, You could save a $100 but a lot of work turning that into usable splits. I also see a lot of shorts and cookies too once cut. If you have enough wood on hand id say go for it. If you do buy the cord of oak be sure its truly dry and a full cord. Inspect it ahead of time if you can. Is that $220 delivered? Cheaper if you pick it up?
