So with the addition of a new little boy to our family we decided a regular cab s-10 would no longer be cutting it so Sat. we ventured to Marietta, OH about a hour and a half from our house in Fairmont, WV spent the day test driving vehicles and finally decided on a vary nice 2006 Ford F250SD CCSB the check engine light was on and I knew there was not a catalytic converter under it but for the asking price I was prepared to replace it myself they said that did not have a tech to check or clear the code and said it had just had work preformed and the codes had not yet been cleared me falling in love with the truck said ok filled out the paperwork and left with the truck.
So fast forward to this morning I needed a bearing from the parts store so I decided to have them check the codes threw two codes about the egr they cleared them and I went on with my day about 30 miles later CEL came back on so after doing a little reading I decided to pull the EGR valve and it was wet with coolant and had sludge in the housing witch should be dry and may have carbon like buildup so that leads me to think the egr cooler is bad and the cause for that I read is the oil cooler looks like $1000 in parts and 20-25 hours labor my warranty reads 30 days or 1000 miles on drive-train only I cover 50% of parts and materials. Starting to think I stink at life lol

It's a crap shoot for those trucks. Best thing to do would be take it back if they'll take it and find another one. You could have a blown head gasket also. Check the coolant level and the oil for contamination. Hope you can get that worked out.

That does stink! I hope they work with you or just take it back without any hassle. Really nice looking truck though sorry it isn't working out. Whenever I buy a used vehicle i get nervous and stay that way for about 6 months after I buy it just waiting to find the issue that it was sold for.

Another thing you might be able to do is to try to see the repair order for the repairs done. Most likely there will be one where it was billed out to the used car dept. If they read the codes first and did no repairs to it to correct it you may have some leverage.

My buddy had almost the same problem. Bought a 6.0L with no DPF. He dint know took it back and they replaced it free of charge and gave him a rental

Call and demand. They said it was something easy...

BTW- That's a beautiful rig bro. Love it, I hate the 6.0L for many reasons, but still a very nice truck!

You couldnt give me a newer pickup with a diesel. They have so many problems with the egr and other emission related components. Back in the old days before the EPA got their mitts in on diesels they were great. I know old 7.3s were loud and stinky but they were pretty reliable.

That sucks man, but they don't call them "sick leakers" for nothing. Hopefully the dealer will show a bit of honesty on this one. If not, hang the tampered vehicle law around their neck and see how they like it.

"it had just had work performed and the codes had not yet been cleared"?? C'mon.

Sounds like you were misled, to get rid of a known POS with tons of known problems.

I'm willing to bet there is plenty of CYA wording in the contract, as far as the dealer's @ss. Good luck.

It is a stupid nice truck and really is everything I want but we will see. My girlfriend drove it down today and dropped it off they said they would have a rental ready when she got there but when they got there they called the rental agency and they came and picked her up took her back there and a hour later she had a rental car on them only thing we paid was some short of a $23 deposit the rental lady said we would get back. I will call tomorrow a hour or so before they close and see if they have looked at it yet. She said one of the sales men said they would let her know as soon as they got a new EGR valve she said she said you only wish it was that easy lol. I made it very clear only a diesel mechanic was to touch it and not to do anything till they called me after he does his own diagnosis on it. So we will see.

Maybe they will fix it and take care of it. If not I would try to make them take it back. Those years of trucks would have to be very cheap or I know for sure the work was done to make them reliable which is really a total EGR system delete and head studs.

Sorry to see you already have found the first flaw with the 6 liter. To echo what mdavlee has said, delete the egr, upgrade the oil cooler and stud the heads. After that is done the 6 liter should last pretty good. The head gaskets usually hold up pretty well until you hit them with a little more boost.

My neighbor had an F250 with a 6 liter, had it "bullet proofed" studs, gaskets, oil cooler upgrade, deleted the egr and had it tuned, it was a great truck for him. He now has a nice Excursion with a 6 liter and had the same mods done before even taking it down the road.

I'd never own a light duty diesel if I didn't have some level of knowledge of them and know plenty of people in the field. I work in the diesel field and most of the heavy duty techs I know hate working on the light duty diesels due to the tight space these things are crammed into. I love small diesels but most of them have their flaws and can cost you big!

Someone saved him the trouble of deleting the DPF and he wanted it back!? He must be nuts, if I had a diesel with a DPF it would be the first thing to go unless the truck had an SCR, then the SCR would go followed by the DPF.

Love the old 7.3's my buddies has nearly 400K on it and he hasn't had hardly any issues.(other than the CPS)

I was washing my 04 Ram Cummins on Sunday and looking at the rust bubble over the fender and I had a quick fleeting thought of a new truck........ And then I laughed. I know mine and it doesn't have any issues I keep up on the maintenance and it doesn't have all the new EPA bull crap on it that i would have to delete. I am going to keep driving this thing and Iif I do anything I will get a new bed for it. Yes I know it's a piece of junk Ram and have been told that many times but other than routine maintenance it's been fine so far.

I have an awesome diesel mechanic who will only work on Cummins and the he says if you get a new one the first thing you need to do is delete the dpf. He told me mine is good for a long time and to keep on driving it. I should also say I'm not easy on trucks I buy them to work with and that's what I do with it.

I really hope they can get your Ford fixed up and running great. It seems like with the 6.0 you either get a good engine or a bad one. I have known quite a few people that got over 200,000 trouble free miles out of their 6.0's and then I knew a few people who fought withe them from day one up to the point that they bought a Duramax.

Keep us updated as I would like to know how this ends.

The Duramax has it's fair share of troubles. You'd be hard pressed to give me an LB7 with all the injector issues they had/have. When these trucks are running right they're fun trucks to drive, start having problems with them and you'll have headache galore! Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance, quality filters and a regular maintenance schedule are a must. No cheap stuff when it comes to these trucks.

Devin, do some reading, Gale Banks did a lot of work towards making the 6.0L ("sick leaker") a reliable performer. If you HAVE to throw some $$ at it, then check out their research.

Ford had a program to fix these trucks too no? The EGR and oil coolers were replaced with stainless parts IIRC? Then there is the head bolt/stud issue. But the primary cause of blown head gaskets is the EGR cooler leaking coolant into the intake. Coolant flashes to steam, raises cylinder pressures to ridiculous levels and ......

ALL new diesels in pickups have injector issues. Just some more than others. Being one of the first to go HPCR, of course it showed up in the DirtyMax first and that will forever be that engines "legacy". My dad owns an '03 LB7 2500HD, still going strong with well over 120K on the clock.
