Picked up a 028 wood boss on marketplace near my house, asking 300, I shot for 250, guy wouldnt budge on 280. How'd i make out? Has a wrapped handle and big dogs on it, and a decent bar and chain. Ill be out cutting tomorrow to test it out.
Don’t have personal experience with the 028 but the saw looks well cared for. Hope it serves you well! Neighbor has one and I’ve asked him several times if he wants to sell it, he always says “nope”!
Got it out to cut some today, runs but doesnt want to idle without dying. I dont have much experience with adjusting at all, tried contacting the guy I bought it from but no response so hopefully I didnt get burned.
If all is original (save for the unusual handle wrap) I'd say you paid a fair price. Stihl made two versions of the 028. The 028 (your saw) at 47cc's and the 028s (super) at 52cc's. Both are excellent firewood saws. My first Stihl was given to me when I was 17 in 1985 by my late uncle was an 028 super. It was accidentally raw gassed years later and ruined. I bought my current one in his memory a few years ago. It always started on four pulls even if it sat for many months with mix in it. Heres a link on the 028 The Legendary Stihl 028 Chainsaw
I think u paid way too much. That thing is ancient. Around here you can't get 50 bucks for them. There was tons of those around 20 years ago and they were dogs then. By the time u spend a little more on wear parts u could almost buy a new one.
Pm me. You aren't too far if you are in Montcalm county. Id give you a tutorial on tuning a saw if interested.
In all honesty, I think you over paid by 50% or more, but, if you like it and are happy with it, that's what matters. I know I've overpaid for items I wanted as well. We all have I'd imagine.
Nice gesture my friend, this is the kind of thing that makes this place what it is. 028 is an OK saw , I used an 028 for years , then MS290 which is basically a newer version and cut a ton of wood with them. Nothing really wrong with them but after going to a pro level saw I now know the difference in the two different classes of saws. I sold my MS290 for $250 when I sold it and it was in "mint" condition.
Thanks guys. I really enjoy helping people with engines ect. It's cool to see their faces when they are able to make their saws ect run well on their own.
Im not too crazy about the handle wrap or the big red dogs, those might need sone black or orange paint
I have similar dogs on my 460 which work well on a bigger saw. Im sure the wrap can easily be removed? Only concern would be tape/glue residue. May give mine a run today cutting some apple.
I picked it up for a backup, and something lighter than my echo 590 for smaller stuff. I lnow its definetly not a pro saw, ive ran a few I just couldn't find any used in my price range
Perfect as a backup saw. When I had mine it was the one saw that always seemed to find it's way into the truck. I don't know why since I had better options. Probably because it always started, ran great and never let me down.
Overpaid is really not much of an issue. It's not like you bought a bridge! You can definitely cut more wood value wise than you spent. The next one you might just win a "you suck"award. Unlike paying for food and drinks you'll still have the saw.
Pulled my 028 out today. Started with six pulls. I know its been 3-4 years since I used it. I enjoyed running an old friend again
What's wrong with buying a bridge...if'n you need a bridge that is... (young trolls hafta start somewhere, right?!) I still use my 290 regularly...don't mind it at all. But I was able to buy it for $75, needing work...it would start, run a couple minutes, then stall...needed a coil...bought used OEM for about $25. Cut a lotta wood with it since then! North of 30 cord I'd guess. Jealous of one that starts in 4 pulls after storage though...mine is 10...4 maybe if ran in the last few days.
